R&B/rap trailblazer Lil’ Kim and iconic actress Dorothy Dandridge receive a little bit of extra shine during Black History Month this year, as drag performer (and one of the queens of turning a phrase), Monique Heart is portraying a specific black icon every day during the month of February. She has simply titled the project Honoring Our Blackness.

In a statement to them, Heart says “I started this series for BHM to honor our Blackness”. She goes on to say “the various people I have chosen to embody are all people in that specific look/outfit, scene, or moment in time that spoke to me as a young queer youth. That inspired and changed my life.”

This is also not the only way Heart (and some of her fellow Drag Race sisters) have been paying tribute to true black excellence currently. Joining Drag Race alumni Bebe Zahara Benet, Bob the Drag Queen, Peppermint, The Vixen, and Shea Coulee in a new show, appropriately titled Nubia. The show will be showcasing black queens and their amazing and varied talents, with back to back dates in Brooklyn, NY on March 5th and 6th.
