On last night’s episode of NBC’s Good Girls, young Sadie (Isaiah Stannard) told mom Annie (Mae Whitman) that they identify as a boy.

The show (now in its second season) follows three suburban moms who are tired of trying to make ends meet, so they decide the solution is to rob a local grocery store. But, of course, it all gets way more complicated than they ever dream.
Last season, there were subtle allusions that Sadie was exploring their gender identity.
Isaiah Stannard, who plays Sadie, is an out trans boy and uses he/him pronouns.
Jenna Bans, creator of the show, spoke to Variety last summer about the casting of Isaiah. Originally, the tweenage role was written a boy named Ben, but the casting director suggested seeing a girl for the part, and Izzy (as he was known at the time) Stannard was hired with the role changing to “Sadie.”
But when filming began, Stannard had begun identifying as male and using he/him pronouns.
“We realized we had a really great opportunity to tell a story about a character who was gender non-conforming, but at the same time not necessarily have that be what leads the story,” Bans told Variety.
“What’s most important to the character and the story we’re telling between Sadie and Annie is really about the bond between Sadie and her mom,” continued Bans. “We liked the idea that the character of Sadie was exploring her gender [expression] in the show, but I think what we responded to more was that the Mae Whitman character just couldn’t care less.”
