Netflix’s Making A Gay Secret Agent Show

Netflix is giving us a gay James Bond-esque secret agent.

After Netflix dropped the ball with their drag queen cartoon Super Drags, the streaming platform has decided to move on to another adult animation with a gay lead. And this time, it’s a secret agent. (Let’s hope they didn’t read the data that James Bond fans support a Black, Latino, Asian, and Female Bond way before they support a gay one).

According to TVLine, the animation series will get 10-episodes and be called Q-Force. It will be an adult-themed animated comedy focused on the adventures of a gay secret agent.

More specifically, the show’s logline says it’s “about a handsome secret agent and his team of fellow LGBTQ superspies. Constantly underestimated by their colleagues, the members of Q-Force have to prove themselves time and again as they embark on extraordinary professional (and personal) adventures.”

The half-hour project originally came from the minds of Mike Schur (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Good Place) and Sean Hayes (Will & Grace). While there is no official word on the cast yet, rumor is that Hayes will voice the lead character.

While talking to Deadline, Sean Hayes says he’d been mulling over the idea for a while.

“A spy TV series is so tough, because they’re so expensive,” Milliner said. “We were thinking how do we get to do gay spy and every week, and the only way to do that is animated, because we can do all of the fun parts of a James Bond film. We can travel, we can have big chase sequences; animation is allowing us that freedom.”

Hayes added:  “Also, I don’t know that the studios would greenlight a feature with a leading character that’s gay in that genre. Hopefully they will, but that doesn’t seem like right now.”

Meanwhile, Gabe Liedman of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and PEN 15 will act as the writer and showrunner for the series. Liedman will also executive produce alongside Schur, Hayes, Todd Milliner, and David Miner.

There is currently no word on a release date yet, as the show has just been greenlit.
