New BET Documentary – Holler If You Hear Me: Black and Gay in the Church

Is the church the next battleground for acceptance?  Will there be internal strife in out places of worship to acknowledge those of us that wish to worship with the religious family we grew up with even though we are LGBT?

With marriage equality, LGBT Pride and the "Transgender Tipping Point," there has been progress for the LGBT community. But some religious institutions sadly fall far behind when it comes to accepting and embracing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender folks. For the first time on film, BET.com and journalist Clay Cane explore homophobia in the Black church with the groundbreaking documentary Holler If You Hear Me: Black and Gay in the Church. – bet.com

My first thought is if a church does not accept you, find another.  That is so much easier said than done.  My drive to be part of any religion is nonexistent, but many are raised in and around the church and desire to continue their faith even after they are blessed with the wisdom of knowing who they are sexually and it does not jive with their faith.  What happens then?  For those of us of faith, this means turmoil.

Created and produced by Cane, the film puts the narrative in the hands of Black LGBT people who are torn between their faith and the way they are treated by their church, the stories are varied, passionate and inspiring. Cane traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, where church and LGBT culture cross paths like nowhere else, to dive into one of the most taboo topics in the Black community. With extraordinary access and without judgment, Cane and BET.com tackle this controversial but important issue through the journeys of those who are living it everyday and whose stories prove we all deserve to be heard and loved.   – bet.com

  1. Organized religion exists so

Organized religion exists so the self-righteous have someone to reject and mock. Time for the disenfranchised to let go.

  2. Sorry but this is so simple..

Sorry but this is so simple….if your religion doesn't  accept you or believes the crap this old lady put out..which most do…then just get out..OUT…why make a crusade over trying to change what the church teaches…Stupid waste of time. I have seen several documentaries like this…Christsian, Arab and Jew…..same old whining….it is not the church, synagogue or mosque that has the problem,…it is YOU…you need to free yourself from your own ignorance….that is that you believe that you need a congregation for salvation. If you are not willing to do that then why and who the fuck are you to demand that they change their beliefs..
