Diplo walked away from a scary situation, but most are just focusing on whether the DJ is gay or not.
A couple days ago, DJ and musician Diplo shared on social media that the front window on his private jet had cracked open. The photo below shows his pilots wearing masks.
“My jet window just cracked open and the pilots are wearing masks so not sure ill make my shows tonight,” he wrote.
A window cracking is scary, but not initially a dangerous situation. Though there are cracks, the airplane’s pressurization system won’t immediately fall apart. That said, it will slowly decrease. As such, air masks are deployed, which you can see with the pilots who are right in front of the crack. In addition, there is a concern for the cracks getting bigger or the window outright breaking. As such, Diplo’s pilots quickly worked to land the plane.
Despite this concern, Diplo wans’t as worried as you may think. At least, he didn’t let that show in his social media post.
“But they left the wifi on so I’m just going to sit in the back and smoke toad venom and vlog,” he wrote. “I just bought this cool vest in Dallas at a thrift store ….. Also I never told you this but I might b[e] gay.”
It’s this last statement that then got the internet buzzing. Not the fact that Diplo’s airplane window cracked. Thankfully, Diplo later updated the world by saying that the plane had landed safely.
“Update: we landed and no one died I still might be gay but I’m definitely not going to tye die [sic] anymore jets..,” he wrote. (The artist had recently painted his personal jet a tie-dye pattern).
But despite some comments of joy at hearing of the DJ’s safety, like Terry Crew saying “Whoa!! Glad you’re okay man,” and Ryan Tedder saying, ““BRUH. That is uncool I hate everything about that window,” there were many people questioning Diplo on his sexuality. This is something the musical celebrity pointed out on social media (before later turning off comments to the post).
But, why did Diplo make that gay comment then? He was probably making a movie reference. As People points out, Diplo was likely referencing a scene in the 2000 film Almost Famous, in which a character who thinks his plane is going to crash abruptly announces, “I’m gay!”
While Diplo should have realized not many would get the reference and would thus be confused, this situation also shows how internet users have become too obsessed with stories and rumors of people coming out.
At the end of the day, Diplo was in a bit of a scary situation, but he walked away just fine. And while we probably wasn’t actually coming out, his joke now has people gossiping about his sexuality. But let’s move on from that, shall we?
