A Brooklyn man is being charged with a hate crime after he terrorized and attacked an LGBTQ couple.

4 NBC New York reports that 32-year-old Emmanuel Dash is being accused of “spewing hate’ against a 32-year-old man and his gender non-conforming partner outside their Brooklyn apartment on June 22.

The Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez states that Dash had apparently seen the couple walking around the neighborhood and chose to target them for harassment. He then allegedly knocked on apartment doors in the neighborhood in search of the couple. After eventually finding them, he allegedly said that he was glad to know where they lived as he didn’t like gay people.

While the couple planned to ease the situation by approaching Dash later, Dash attacked them with a knife on June 22 while the couple was returning home. Dash ended up stabbing the 32-year-old in the back of his neck, which resulted in a 6-inch gash that partially severed his vertebral artery.

Dash was later arrested two days later and charged with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault as a hate crime, and a few other charges. If convicted Dash could be facing up to 25 years in prison.

“This defendant allegedly violated the sanctity and safety of this couple’s home when he showed up at their door spewing hate, then escalated it to a violent assault. There is no place for such ignorance and intolerance in Brooklyn, where we celebrate our diversity. We will now seek to hold this defendant accountable for this very serious attack,” Gonzalez said in a statement.
