Shake the dice and steal the rice! Paris is Burning is being re-released in theaters!
The iconic 1991 film will have a two-week run at New York’s Film Forum arthouse theater starting on June 14th, just in time for Pride. The restoration for it will be supervised by its director Jennie Livingston.
Don’t worry folks who can’t make it to New York City during that time frame. It will have a national roll out to keep the ball going throughout the summer after The Big Apple engagement is done.
Paris is Burning is considered to be a pinnacle of LGBTQ culture. The film goes behind the scenes of the Ball culture that was prevalent throughout parts of NYC in the late 80’s and early 90’s.
The film inspired a lot of what we see on television today. RuPaul’s Drag Race constantly references quotes from it, notably Mercedes Diamond Iman‘s hilarious way of saying Junior LaBeija‘s “Opulence!”
It also inspired the F/X series Pose, which returns for its second season on June 9.
Paris is Burning returning to The Film Forum is quite the homecoming indeed as it initially premiered there back in 1991. The movie ended up having a successful 6-month run at the theater.
