I'm an OUAT fan. Once Upon A Time has been a part of my Sunday nights since it debuted on October 23, 2011. I am such a fan that I worked in a visit to Steveston, British Columbia as part of my April 2014 vacation to the Northwest for my 40th birthday celebration. Steveston, a small quaint town just south of Vancouver, is Storybrooke, Maine, once the shops change some of their external facades and the geeks add in a coupe of CGI tricks like creating the library clock tower that doesn't exist in real life over the real life Steveston fishing shop. I plan on going back again if another trip to the Northwest occurs.
What makes me a fan? I am not sure. The writing, acting, and visuals are pleasing and the show has just become one of my guilty pleasures. My friend Jay and I text during the broadcast every Sunday and maybe that has something to do with why I watch. But he gets mad at me since I usually predict what happens 110% of the time sometimes weeks in advance. Okay, so maybe the writing is not as imaginative as I would like for I still like to be shocked. It wasn't like the last episode of Grim where someone loses their head.
So is there enough going on in OUAT? Pretty much, but what about a gay character? Some people I have talked to have rolled their eyes at that thought and loudly exclaimed, "Why do you need a gay person in the show!?!" I guess there is no need, but I just think it would be interesting. There was a little hope when Captain Hook came into the series with his guyliner, but then he went and started dating Emma. Others have said, sure, it would be a good twist on things to have a gay character, but who?
We have seen one gay character in OUAT, but it was rather predictable. Mulan's girl crush on Sleeping Beauty (Princess Aurora) was a definite one sided lesbian / bisexual connection. We haven't seen Mulan in quite some time. Did ABC / Disney dabble in the gay pool just a little and never to return?
So if one of our fairy tale characters were to be written in as gay, who would it be? One of the dwarves? One of the fairies? How about a male fairy? Gay twins Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum? Jiminy Criekett? Or would it take the introduction of a new character that hasn't been in any fairy tale yet. Maybe Henry will be gay? The Sorcerer?
Does OUAT need a Gay Character?
If you could write for OUAT, would you make a character gay? And if so who?
Actually, Disney is usually always seen as homophobic, they rarely have gay/lesbian/bi characters in shows or movies. One of my friends is gay, and agrees with the homophobic Disney theory. I myself am bi, and I have seen season 7 of OUAT, and Alice and Robin are 2 of my favorite characters in the show. They make season 7 my favorite season, and those of you here who are writing out of homophobia, please, be respectful. You don’t need to take out your own sadness and hatred of yourself on other people.
I for one, think that Peter
I for one, think that Peter Pan should've been gay. Now however, a new choice needs to be made. I think maybe if they add in John and Michael Darling, they should make john gay and maybe even make him have a slight crush on peter!
The moment Once upon a time
The moment Once upon a time introduces a gay character, I'm going to stop watching. I'm in Season 5. I've gotten really into it. But I will immediately stop watching if a gay character is introduced.
I think Anonymous is a bitch.
I think Anonymous is a bitch. He/she is obviously homophobic and needs to just shut up if she doesn't have anything noc to say. Also, if your homophobic, why the hell do you comment on things like that.
Man did you even watch season 3
So you’re homophobic, and when they add a new character to you it’s fine. But if it’s a gay one, it’s like the world is ending! What’s wrong with a character who had interest in the same sex?! Its just another character.
I don’t care how characters
I don't care how characters are built, as long as they're well developed. I came here because I googled that hook looks super gay, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so! Maybe pirates just look gay in general, I don't know.
I’m sick of the whole gay
I'm sick of the whole gay agenda! Can't we even leave it out iof Disney? Please don't respond to this with liberal righteous indignation. I'm a traditionalist and a conservative, so none of your arguments will work anyway!
Who cares what you think!!!!
Who cares what you think!!!!
Gay us here,. If you don’t
Gay us here,. If you don't like it you have two choices Accept it or leave the land of the living you biggot
once upon a time isnt disney. its for mature aduiences clearly you shouldn’t watch 💀
This it’s just really
This it's just really ridiculous and CRAZY!!! If I had a child in school the teacher better not read my child a gay or any other unorthodoxed Fairy Tale I'm not against gay people or the other things they choose to call themselves my sister is gay so it's okay with me but don't push it in people's faces if they don't want to hear it or see it that should be something you do in your house in the privacy of your own home and not in public
LOL thank you for the laugh
LOL thank you for the laugh <3 you're not smart 😀
Yeah. I mean i really hate it
Yeah. I mean i really hate it when black people are on TV i mean they really hove in out faces. They might turn our kids black.
For the love of God, please
For the love of God, please don't have a child. No one deserves someone like you for a parent.
But Straight People Do It All The Time!
Really stupid move. The
Really stupid move. The Disney agenda has gone so liberal. NO, there is no need for a gay character to be forced into the show. It's enough to make me stop watching. It was getting too damn confusing anyway.
Who cares what you think!
Who cares what you think! Stop watching it, then!
Wow! Hateful a little?
Wow! Hateful a little?
It’s just the same thing as any other straight couple getting together. There’s nothing wrong with it.
LBGT relationships in OUAT is
LBGT relationships in OUAT is not needed for ratings, so why do it?, Also why so few African American characters?
The “gaying” of a character
The "gaying" of a character is one thing. It can work if has no established love interest or the past is somewhat in question. I say that because the lack of anything definite makes any revelation possible. New information works when it doesn't overwrite anything we already know.
With that said, i personally think Mulan was not done well. I don't say that because I think it's bad for her to be gay. It just comes out of frikkin nowhere. They set her up working with Philip and staying with him so much that the implication was that she wanted him. When Aurora awakens and she renews her relationship with Philip, the connection to Aurora didn't seem clear to me at all. The implication was that she spent so much time with Philip before even meeting Aurora that she was attracted to him. There's nothing in her past that precludes such a connection to Aurora, except that it wasn't the way the story was naturally going. It felt tacked on terribly.
Ruby on the other hand was handled well. There's still a lot about her that we don't know. We know she ate one boyfriend once, and there's not been anyone else since. Plus, there was no real trend in her personal story toward anyone in particular. Dorothy is the same. There's no male connection in the real story, nor in the one presented here. If you're going to do something like this, these are the characters where it works best. If any of the others, say Belle for example, were to be outed, more explanation would be necessary to make it logical. And that could be as simple as showing that she had an attraction to another girl sometime in the past. If you don't do this, which is what happened with Mulan, it just doesn't work. For me, I dislike the Mulan outing not because of the "gayness," but because it didn't work logically. Just not a good outing.
As a family we have enjoyed
As a family we have enjoyed watching Once Upon a Time together for a few years now. Tonight's introduction of Ruby and Dorothy as a couple, with full lipped kissing, really dissapointed everyone in our family. We like to see how all the fairy tales come together. Tonight was a shocker though. Shame on you ABC for ruining an awesome show. We will not be watching it anymore. What a waste. This is no longer a family friendly series.
We do hope that no one in
We do hope that no one in your family, especially one of your children is gay. Will you stop loving them, too? It was okay for Ruby to eat her boyfriend, but to kiss another woman? What?
I agree with you. I have no
I agree with you. I have no problem with gay/lesbian whatever. What I have a problem with is them taking a well known character and making them gay for ratings. Introduce someone new and take it that route if you must. The second thing I have a problem with is my child watches this show and I feel that in this day and age, things are forced upon us. She may be whatever she is meant to be but at this point in life, she is to young to think about anything other that a short little true loves kiss…not a close up make out session.
I agree 100%!!! This
I agree 100%!!! This lifestyle is forced on us everywhere you look, but for someone to say they have a problem with it is a complete outrage!!! For a Disney company to force this into a popular show is ridiculous!!!! Thanks for completely ruining a favorite show of my family's Disney, sickening that you felt the need to make your stance here….
Just wanted you to know this
Just wanted you to know this is most likely a tribute to Judy Garland who played Dorthy, she was the first gay icon, and I think it's neat that they did it that way. It's really not that big of a deal, and since ur obviously such a bigot, may all ur children turn out gay. My children watch this show to, but guess what, they don't care who other ppl sleep with, so it didn't faze them at all, maybe u should also teach ur kids to butt out of others bedroom choices.
Shame on YOU for
Shame on YOU for automatically assuming that not wanting to see people engaging in homosexual acts in prime-time TV with their children makes them a bigot. Seems that YOU'RE the bigot here. It seems to me that someone voicing any opinion other than agreeing with you is completely unacceptable to you. Too bad that freedom of speech goes both ways – not just the PC way that means you can force your opinions down someone's throat but they are not allowed to respond lest they be called vile names by you. Guess what? Regardless of what agenda you want to force, people still have the right to decide what they will believe, tolerate and want for their own families. Get over yourself.
Why not make a jail for us
Why not make a jail for us who speak against gays. the Problem is taking beloved characters and changing their race and sex for a schlock shows sake. make new characters and ruin them. god's sake the Classic authors are rolling over in their graves everywhere. nobody ever thinks of making a black white do they? jafar black what a slap in robin williams dead face and his family too. ok you can arrest me now.
Schlock? Robin Williams was
Schlock? Robin Williams was not Jafar. Many of the Classic dead writers were gay. The Little Mermaid killed herself at the end of the original story.
Why does captain hook need to
Why does captain hook need to be gay?!
I think it’d be pretty cool
I think it'd be pretty cool to have an lgbt character in OUAT because that stuff should be shown a little bit more but I also think they should've added an lgbt character sooner instead of now because now it seems they're only adding this so they can get more viewers and please the younger generation with it but nonetheless I'm still glad that they're showing something rather than nothing at all.
Mulan and Red please!! It
Mulan and Red please!! It could totally work and I think they would be compatible:)
I would say with them
I would say with them introducing Merida this next season there’s a definite possibility for another gay character there. Possibly even a match for Mulan. But its not necessary in the show. I do agree it would definitely help their ratings as it has dropped off lately and help include the LGBT community more into the show. I enjoy the show most of the time even if it is predictable.
The only problem I see with
The only problem I see with Merida is between her and Mulan they would be playing to close to stereotypes. Both are fighters and have a lot of personality similarities. I hope they match up Mulan and Red Ridding Hood.
Why can’t OUAT have a gay
Why can't OUAT have a gay character maybe it would help the show appeal to LGBT youth and adults alike. I dont know about anyone else but i get so tired of the Male to female relationship dynamic being constantly shoved down my throat in every show i watch, i shouldnt HAVE to watch a "gay show" in order to avoid having to have the idea of the only relationships out there being straight ones. Bring in a gay character I kinda think ursula could've gone gay or straight but she's gone now.
Mulan has been out of the
Mulan has been out of the closet with her feeling towards Aurora for a while
I would like to see one in
I would like to see one in the show. It needs something to pick up my interest again. I’ve missed most of the second half of this sesson. The introduction of the trio of witches kinda lost me. The story has also become quite predictable. My vote is for Pinocchio/August. It would work as we really don’t know much about him unless I missed some more of his backstory.
In the finale, the ogre
In the finale, the ogre Cyclops in the alternate reality was gay. I saw him fall for a rumple!
If you’ve really been
If you've really been watching OUAT you know Jiminy has already been in the show and was killed in season 2. There was no sexuality mentioned or intimated.
Actually, if you’ve really
Actually, if you've really been watching OUAT, then you know that Jiminy is alive and well. It wasn't really him whom Cora killed, as the episode later revealed.
always thought they should’ve
always thought they should've made peter pan gay. he was pretty much already there in the disney movie and the original story,
Because LGBT people are a
Because LGBT people are a part of everyday life. Kind of a ridiculous question, don't you think?
fairytales are not everyday
fairytales are not everyday life . it's a refuge for our imagination . what I don't get it , why not create a whole new character altogether and make them gay instead of taking the risk to disapoint fans ? i mean , Mulan is not gay you guys , she has a boyfriend . Imo they should have picked Red to be a lesbian. she has that butch thing going on , they could have matched her with emma because the couple Hook/emma has no chemistry (IMO once again) , and emma has a butch thing as well
I like the idea of Jiminy
I like the idea of Jiminy Criekett. There is no way that anyone could say that we were shoving overly-sexed shallow gay culture in their faces. Jiminy is a wise and kind grown up character. We could use more of those guys to look up to, while representing us. He never had a love interest in Pinocchio, so it could easily go either way. Why not make him LGBT?! I do love this idea!!!! In my heart, he is gay already! My vote is for JIMINY!!! 🙂 Yes yes… the gay cricket!!!
(PS… Gosh, I copied and
(PS… Gosh, I copied and pasted the name "Jiminy Cricket" from this article so I would be sure to spell it correctly. But, after I posted it, I realized it was very misspelled as "Jiminy Criekett." Oye… Oh well, we get the point.)
i would make henry gay and
i would make henry gay and add a new caracter that henry falls for him and finishes coming out and makeing out with him that would be perfect
i find it interesting that
i find it interesting that people who write "Why does there have to be a Gay character in every story" i could write why does there have to be a straight character in every story. The reason is there is a Gay character in every ones life whether you wish to aka it or not. I love the show but would like it a lot more if there were more Gay characters in Storybrooke!
Yes!!! Love your comment!
Yes!!! Love your comment! Thank you, friend. 🙂
This show is getting tougher
This show is getting tougher and tougher to watch lately. I have missed the last 2 episodes and keeping skipping them on my DVR to watch something else on Netflix. I don't know if a gay character would help it out. I don't even know if a gay charcter could revive the show for me – but can always use a little more eye candy on the show.
I might be in the minority
I might be in the minority here but I don’t think every show needs a gay character. If we keep pushing our agenda on mom & pop America it is going to backfire. I am thrilled with the strides we as a community have made but when you go changing storybook characters that everyone has loved from childhood up it is only gonna piss people off. Let them alone!
“Pushing our agenda” ???? …
"Pushing our agenda" ???? ….. I don't know what agenda you are trying to push on people, but please do not put our entire community into that statement. The only agenda that I have is for all good hearted people to be treated with respect, fairness and kindness. By putting a gay character into a television show, there is nothing pushed onto people; it is simply representing more diversity. Nothing is being pushed on anybody! We should not live our lives hiding from bigoted "mom & pop America" and letting them continue to feel justified in being pissed that we exist. –No way–
My grandmother is in her 80s, and she is extremely open minded and kind toward al minorities. When asked how she didn't become a close-minded older person, she said, "That's easy. I just decided to be a good person." Not all mom and pop people are angered by our existence. Bigots are taught to hate, but they decide to stay that way. ….It always helps a cold heart to warm up to 'different' people by becoming familiar with them. Having more LGBT people on television is helping to show that gay people are good people too; it is not pushing anything. (Your comment sounds like it is written by an undercover bigoted or internalized-homophobic person, honestly.) …Let's just embrace our community of really great and deserving people. If a**holes get mad about it, then that is their hate to work through– not ours.
So come on, let's embrace our own diversity. 🙂
Yeah, I’m going to have to
Yeah, I'm going to have to reiterate that the title of your post shouldn't be what it is.
To answer your question, I'm really up in the air. As a gay male, I do appreciate it when TV shows have LGBT representation (i.e. Revenge – RIP, Scandal, How To Get Away With Murder, Brothers & Sisters, etc). That being said, to have a gay character on a show just for the sake of having one I think is the wrong move. I think OUAT creators did a great job giving us Mulan and her identity twist from the Disney movie. I think if they were to bring back Mulan and have them explore her love life, that would be enough for me. But I don't think they need to introduce a new character or make a well-known prince/princess gay just for the sake of it.
I don’t think that they need
I don't think that they need a gay character just for the sake of having a gay character, just like I don't think that they need a black character, hispanic character, oriental character…..etc, etc, because it's the PC thing to do.
That being said, usually those who are gay gravitate to someone that they are interested in, and it is not necessarily someone who is available. Here are a few options for a gay (non-stereotypical PLEASE!) character:
Mr. Smee / Friar Tuck / The Huntsman / The Three Little [Sex] Pigs (these could be VERY interesting: especially if the Wolf is changed into an adoring younger character in pursuit of one of the pigs….)
No. Why do people NEED a gay
No. Why do people NEED a gay guy or gal in every show? It’s just pushing it down every watchers throat. Bi, gay, lez are getting rights to wed. And things are going well…ezzzz up. It’s just going to cause problems.
Um…while I agree there is
Um…while I agree there is no need for a gay character, not every "bi, gay, or lez" can get married and since these are equal rights it has no reason to be your pathetic attempt for justifying your reasons. Try again.
Calm down. Go toward love. It
Calm down. Go toward love. It would make you seem like a nice, tolerable person.
I totally agree. I don’t like
I totally agree. I don't like how there can't be just one show that doesn't have gay characters. It's everywhere. And being someone who doesn't agree with homosexuality makes it hard to watch any media nowadays.
Yet, you’re on a gay magazine
Yet, you're on a gay magazine site with other gay people posting and you don't agree with it? Well I don't agree with you posting biggoted comments towards the LGBT community. I don't agree with constantly seeing heterosexual characters make out — but guess what WE don't have a choice in the matter we have to watch it Everywhere!!!! LGBT community has been around long before Jesus Christ and the ancient Greeks! I dont agree with gay youth committing suicide because of people saying hurtful words. Guess what gay characters have been on television whether they were out or not since the 50's! Your ignorance is astounding. Until you've walked a mile in our shoes I suggest you close your mouth!!! I don't agree with fundamentalists but do I go around saying so? No, because when it comes to religion or sexuality you don't need to disagree or agree it just is what it is.
Is that what you plan to tell God?
Have the original Price
Have the original Price Charming turn up alive, and gay.
While I don’t appreciate the
While I don’t appreciate the misleading title, I will voice my opinion. I don’t feel like a gay character is needed bc they don’t put too much focus on non-regular characters love lives but I think it would be nice. More so than a gay character I think I would prefer Red to come back. And that’s saying a lot bc I want a gay character in every show I watch.

Guyliner makes a guy gay now?
Guyliner makes a guy gay now? That's news.
Definitely it should be a
Definitely it should be a prince.
I wish Mulan would make a
I wish Mulan would make a reappearance. Even better, bring in a gay character who could actually have a love interest that reciprocates. Prince Charming and Snow White have each other, why can't there be two same-sex characters who reciprocate love and end up together? Not sure who it'd be… perhaps the Sorcerer? Despite my love for the potential of SwanQueen, I'm not sure that ABC would actually make that a reality. Although it certainly won't stop the fandom, thankfully.
↵ive always wonder that if
↵ive always wonder that if someday Disney made a gay cartoon movie what the fairytale story would be based on… and for me it should be the The Steadfast Tin Soldier… but i dont think that this would be the case with the ABC show that is mostly based its stories on actual Disney characters, but i defenetly dont think its gonna be a gay Prince.
Just a note: It’s Steveston
Just a note: It's Steveston not Steveson.
As for the gay character… maybe there is one and he/she doesn't feel the need to announce it to the world.
Thanks! I always put it in
Thanks! I always put it in wrong in the GPS, too!
Just don’t make him stereo
Just don't make him stereo typical!!!!! please so sick of it!
I don’t think it needs to
I don't think it needs to have a gay character, but I wouldn't complain if it did. However, I think it would make things a bit more balanced. There are a gay people in all walks of life, why not in a fairy-tale land? Here's a thought… maybe very straight Will Scarlet could be zapped by an (evil?) spell that makes him like men instead of women. Then over the course of time the spell wears off or someone finds a so-called cure and he remains bi. Aside from "Night Shift" are there any other shows on now where a gay character is a major character in the show and not just some side-character or minor player? I don't watch too much TV and that may be a naive question, but I'm tired of the gay characters having only small parts.
You should check out a show on Netflix, called Legacies. It has a main LGBTQ+ character, she is pansexual. She does eventually leave the show though, though I believe that it was her choice.
Wait……so this says theyre
Wait……so this says theyre going to introduce a gay character……but in reality its just the writer of the article that wants a gay character? Dumb!
Yep, just me wanting one and
Yep, just me wanting one and asking readers if they would like one, too. And if so, who? Thanks for reading Nancy Lucille.
