Earlier this week, a British man made headlines for claiming that his medicine made him gay.
23-year-old Scott Purdy spoke to Daily Mail to say that his sexual orientation changed after taking Lyrica/Pregabalin. Purdy was taking the pain relief medicine after an accident, and then “four or five days later” he says he was no longer attracted to the opposite sex (which was awkward for his girlfriend).
“I had never been interested in men. When I was younger I was a little bit curious, but a couple of weeks after I started taking it I turned around and said I didn’t find her physically attractive anymore. “
“She knew I was taking Pregabalin.”
“I said to her, ‘I don’t really know what’s happening to me and I told her I like men and I just can’t be with you.’”
“She was relatively understanding, as understanding as you could possibly be.”
Due to the fact that Lyrica, or known professionally as Pregabalin, is also used to help with anxiety, our guess would be that the loss of anxiety helped Purdy come to terms with his bicurious sexuality. And, that’s exactly what experts, and Purdy’s father, believe.
After the news spread around online, Purdy appeared on ITV’s This Morning where an NHS professional, presenter, and author, named Dr. Ranj Singh, told him that “these feelings were probably already there.”
As the doctor added, “this has allowed you and given you permission to be who you are.”
On top of that, Purdy’s 57-year-old father, Nigel Purdy, told MailOnline that his son was always into men.
“I know my son and we have always just assumed he was bisexual; as it turns out he is gay. It’s just the way he was, even when he was younger,” claimed Nigel.
“It was his general mannerisms. A parent knows their child. I don’t know why he has waited to come out with all this. His whole life has been a lie.
“He has told me in the past that he admitted that he started experimenting with a lad when he was younger.”
Scott’s 56-year-old Stepmother Gail, also added that she’s known about his sexuality for years, “We’ve asked him for years if he likes men and he could have just admitted it to us.”
That said, Scott Purdy is adamant that this shift in his sexuality is totally based on the drug. In fact, he even brings up on This Morning the fact that he took pregabalin once before as a teenager going through cancer.
“They prescribed them for me after I had cancer to help me sleep.
“I have been on them for quite some while and I’m still straight.
“I saw that doctor on This Morning yesterday; how he managed to keep a straight face I don’t know.”
For now, Purdy insists that the medicine is what’s keeping him gay, and says that he’s happy that way.
