‘And The Winner is’: 5 Major Takeaways From Last Night’s Grammy Awards

The Grammy Awards made its way back to New York City last night for the first time in 15 years, as Madison Square Garden played host to what turned out to be quite a fantastic night.

Bruno Mars came out on top at the end of the night, sweeping the main categories (Record, Album, Song of the Year) which was deemed quite an upset, in particular for Album of the Year as many experts thought Kendrick Lamar would finally take it for his latest effort Damn. 

Outside of Bruno's major wins, there were several highlights throughout the night that really made it quite the fun show to watch.  Take a look at our five takeaways.

1. Kesha Triumphs.  Kesha mentioned a day before the Grammys about how nervous she was to perform "Praying" due to the emotional baggage that comes with the song (it was inspired by her legal battle with music producer Dr. Luke, who she has had a lengthy court battle with over her claims that he drugged and raped her as well as controlled her career.)  She took all that pain and channeled it into an awe-inspiring performance where she had some pretty amazing backup singers in Andra Day, Camila Cabello, Cyndi Lauper, Julia Michaels and Bebe Rexha.  There wasn't a dry eye in the audience. 

2. Blue Ivy Tells Her Mom and Dad to quiet down. Although he didn't win a single award that night (he already has several under his belt, so no worries there) Jay-Z did end up having quite a humorous moment during the Grammys when his six year old daughter Blue Ivy told both him and mommy Beyonce to quiet down while Camila Cabello was making an impassioned speech about immigration.  Give her an Oscar right now. 

3. Elton and Miley together.  With the sad news that Elton John will be retiring from music in three years, we are going to have to get all we can from one of the greatest artists of all time and The Grammys were no exception.  Elton took the piano seat chair by storm and performed one of his biggest hits, "Tiny Dancer" with the help from Miley Cyrus, who looked and sounded better than ever.  Let's all enjoy Elton as much as we can over the next three years because performances like this are why we fell in love with him in the first place.

4. "Fire and Fury" read along.  Throughout the night, The Grammys were a political hot bed, ranging from topics such as the #metoo movement and immigration in our country.  James Corden decided to poke fun at our current president in a sort of light-hearted way by having several celebrities read excerpts from the book "Fire and Fury" by Michael Wolfe.  And they saved the best for last, as Hillary Clinton read one with thunderous applause coming from the audience.  This, of course, pissed off conservatives like Nikki Haley, but who cares?  It's funny and the show went on.

5. Cardi B's hilarious comment.  The "Bodak Yellow" rapper has never been one to shy away from making hysterical comments in the past, and The Grammys were no different.  During an interview with E!'s Giuliana Rancic, Cardi said this regarding her excitement for the night ahead.  "“I’m feeling good, I’m feeling nervous, overwhelmed — everything.  Butterflies in my stomach and vagina!”  Oh, girl!
