The Spanish media outlet Desastre.mx reports that an individual close to Méndez knew him as a very committed and sensitive person who had received numerous threats against him because he was gay.

Along with being a devoted teacher, Méndez was the choreography leader and costumer for a group called ‘Cisnes’. Additionally, he dedicated himself to many humanitarian efforts and charity efforts for children in his community.

A human rights activist from Puebla says:

They did not kill him for being a teacher, or for selling costumes, or for having a dance group. They killed him because of his sexual orientation and we are outraged and interested to find out who or who killed him and to the full extent of the law, because he was one of us.

Authorities are currently investigating this case as a hate crime.
