‘Call Me By Your Name’ Sequel Will Deal With AIDS Crisis

A few weeks ago we reported that director Luca Guadagnino was entertaining the idea of giving acclaimed film Call Me By Your Name a series of films. We all went nuts over the idea of this happening. Whether you are on board with the idea or you absolutely hate it, up until recently, Guadagnino hadn’t said much more about the concept. But now with CMBYN and Timothée Chalamet garnering some HUGE nominations for the 90th Academy Awards and other major honors, Guadagnino has seems to really be taking this seriously.

As it was previously known, the book from which CMBYN was adapted goes to speak about the Elio and Oliver for the next twenty years, but the director didn’t want to include these years in the film. However, with the hype the film has received, Guadagnino would like to revisit these years.

The director spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and has shared more information about the plan to continue CMBYN.

In the novel, the AIDS epidemic became a focal point of the story and it seems the film’s director will elevate the next film to deal with this crisis.

Luca Guadagnino share with THR:

I think Elio [Timothee Chalamet] will be a cinephile, and I'd like him to be in a movie theater watching Paul Vecchiali's Once More. That could be the first scene [in the sequel].

Once More is a film from 1988 about a man who falls in love with a another man after he leaves his wife, which was the first French movie to deal with AIDS.

Guadagnino also commented:

The novel has 40 pages at the end that goes through the next 20 years of the lives of Elio and Oliver, so there is some sort of indication through the intention of author Andre Aciman that the story can continue. In my opinion, Call Me can be the first chapter of the chronicles of the life of these people that we met in this movie, and if the first one is a story of coming of age and becoming a young man, maybe the next chapter will be, what is the position of the young man in the world, what does he want — and what is left a few years later of such an emotional punch that made him who he is?

There is still no confirmation as to whether Call Me By Your Name will receive follow-up films, but with based on how much success it is receiving, it is likely that we may see Elio and Oliver again on screen.

The revival of the film with a sequel could help or hinder the following. Call Me By Your Name has been such a pivotal film with poignant LGBTQ storytelling. If there are follow-up films, we hope they will live up to the beauty that is Call Me By Your Name. Also, more Armie Hammer in short shorts.

  2. I haven’t seen the movie yet,

I haven't seen the movie yet, but if the film is anything like the book, a sequel is out of the question. When the book ends, you can't help but predict Elio will be an out, proud, gay man and Oliver will get married and have flings with men on the side.
