While on trial with the Teesside Crown Court for the death of 34-year-old Jessica Patel, 37-year-old Mitesh Patel, the pharmacist-turned-suspect shared what’s been on his mind since his arrest.

Mr. Patel shares that he and his wife once watched a YouTube video about “How long someone takes to die from strangulation.”

According to BBC News, Patel said the following while in court:

"For the last six and a half months, every day in that prison cell, one of the many, many things I have thought is, 'how ironic was this?'.

"The cause of Jessica's death was that, and anyone sat there would be thinking, 'What on earth is going on?’”

The Teesside Crown Court found evidence that Patel was using the gay dating app Grindr to meet other men and wanted to start a new life with a male doctor.

The prosecution suggests that Patel murdered his wife to acquire a £2m life insurance claim and move to Australia.

The court also shared that the couple had been trying to hve children and went through three cycles of IVF treatment. During this process in 2017, Jessica Patel discovered that her husband was watching gay porn and was texting other men. She then sought the advice of Mitesh’s brother.

On top of that, the persecution also accused Mr. Patel of searching the internet for information about Hindu funerals for a married woman, insulin overdoses, and coroners.

In response, Patel says he feared being discovered as an Asian gay man, but he insists that he did not kill his wife.

"I cannot explain how I felt, it was the fear of being exposed as an Asian gay man, and I was going to let Jess down.

"One thing is the truth, I have not anything do to with killing Jessica."

The trial is ongoing.
