Gotham’s Riddler / Cory Michael Smith Comes Out As Part Of ‘1985’ Interview?

Gotham fans may be looking at this most recent interview with the Riddler as eye opening.  Cory Michael Smith chatted with The Daily Beast about his newest project '1985'. The movie shares the story of a young man heading home to Texas for the holidays. Does his family know he's coming home to come out as well as to say goodbye? We shall see. i knew I should have gone to SXSW in Austin!

If you are a fan of Gotham, you know that there was a bromance that was going a little deeper on the show. The Penguin (played by out actor Robin Lord Taylor) was attracted to the Riddler (played by Cory Michael Smith) in more ways than one. Being a fan of the entire Batman series, I stepped back a little and remembered the television show being overly campy, but not out and gay. Would the show take that step?  We'll see now that the Riddler is gaining his strength.

Back to '1985' and Cory Michael Smith's part in the movie.

“There’s something special about telling a story that feels closer to home,” Smith, who identifies as queer, tells The Daily Beast. “I’m not exactly like The Riddler in real life.

“I’m from Middle America,” he says. “I’m from Ohio. I’ve been living here [in New York] for a while, and there are stretches when I don’t see my family often. Going home and that whole charade is very familiar. The first family dinner after a while. Coming out to a family, the fear of that.”

He says his family handled his coming out with “a lot of love,” though it took “a lot of time.” It wasn’t hard for him to imagine the pain Adrian [his character in '1985'] feels as he goes through his last holidays with his parents… – dailybeast

Did Smith just state that he can relate to the coming out aspect of his character since he did it himself? Did The Daily Beast just write he identifies as queer?  We think yes on both accounts.

There's another great talent in Hollywood saying, yep, I'm gay/bi/gender fluid/queer. It's like how many of us want it to be … just work it into a conversation and use a reference and keep moving forward.

Best of luck in the success of '1985' Cory. And now I'll enjoy a little more continuing to have that crush on you knowing that we play on the same rainbow team.

Here's a video back from 2014 where Cory Michael Smith introduces us to his character Edward Nygma / The Riddler

  1. Does anyone remember the old

    Does anyone remember the old joke about gay dating profiles?  It went something like this:

    Top=Versatile

    Versatile=Bottom

    Bottom=Legs in the air slut

    I can't help but wonder if something similar is going on with sexual identities with celebrities:

    Gay=Gold star

    Queer=Gay but had relationships with women

    Bisexual=See Queer

    Sexually Fluid=Bisexual

    Straight=Prefer women, but for the right guy…

    Just my tongue-in-cheek thoughts.
