Back in October, we shared with you the news that Hong Kong had won the right to host the Gay Games and that it would be the first Asian city to do so.

Now, that future is officially set as Hong Kong’s bidding committee signed the license agreement with the Federation of Gay Games.

This now marks the start of preparation for the 9-day Gay Games event scheduled for November 2022. That said, this won’t be the very next Gay Games to take place, as Paris will be hosting it later this year between August 4 and August 12.

The event is expected to have more than 15,000 participants and give Hong Kong’s economy a boost of about 130 million US dollars.

“After the announcement of our win in October, the Gay Games Hong Kong team worked hand-in-hand with the Federation of Gay Games and our legal partner Linklaters to finalize the 42 pages License Agreement in order to bring the best possible Gay Games,” said Hong Kong 2022 chair, Dennis Philipse.

“Together with the Federation of Gay Games, we have big plans to ensure the event will become a trailblazer for increased progress in diversity and inclusion in the world’s most populous region.”

“Our next steps are to help with the success of the next Gay Games in Paris and to continue conversations with the Hong Kong SAR Government, sport associations and sponsors.”

In addition, the Federation in charge of the Gay Games not only trust that the Hong Kong committee will provide a wonderful experience, but that they will help bring conversation of LGBTQ acceptance to the rest of the Asian world.

“The Federation of Gay Games is thankful to the Hong Kong organizers for their successful bid efforts, but we are more excited for our historic first opportunity to promote equality in Asia,” said Federation of Gay Games co-president Sean Fitzgerald.
