Instinct Exclusive with The Handsome & Multi-Talented Adam Ramzi

It's sort of hard to not be attracted to Adam Ramzi on some level. Everything from his piercing eyes, chiseled features and charismatic persona are enough to make any man weak in the knees.

Adam is a jack of all trades, as he does quite a lot: he is an internationally-known porn star, an actor (outside of the adult industry) and a talented musician to boot (both originals and covers).

He's been quite busy this summer, as his schedule and social life has landed him all over the United States from Provincetown to New York City all the way to Los Angeles… the latter of which he calls home.

Luckily, he had some free time where we got to chat about what he's been up to lately, how he got into the industry in the first place, if he's enjoyed said industry, coming out and so much more. Take a look.

You go by a lot of titles: actor, musician, adult film star, etc. Is there one that is your focal point right now?

I am an easily distracted person, and I like saying yes to things, so this has been a recurring theme for me these days. I enjoy having my hands in many pots, and trying to be a little bit of everything, but I’m getting this nagging feeling lately that long term goals need to be set in motion, so I’m starting to try and channel more energy toward setting up the mental health career I started even before porn.

People primarily know you for your time in the gay adult world. How did you get into that in the first place?

When I was in grad school for psychology, I got randomly contacted by Chris Ward, the president of Raging Stallion at the time, who found some photos and liked what he saw.  He sent me a very sweet email saying he liked what I was about and that I was perfect for their brand, and if I was at all interested in trying porn that he’d be happy to have me. I was unsure about it at first, but then it made more sense the more I thought about it, considering how often sex and sexuality came up in my program.  So I thought of it as an experiment, and here we are five years later!

What inspired you to name yourself Adam Ramzi?

It’s a take on my own first name (A-Ram), and Ramsey was one of the many random nicknames that my little brothers had for me growing up. The “ram” in my name gave way to many nicknames, like Rambo, Remus, Raymond, Ramathorn… Ramsey was always one of my favorites, and then I met a friend’s brother whose first name is Ramzi, and I loved the way it was spelled. So I co-opted it for myself!

Has the overall experience in the industry been a positive one for you, and if so, why?

My experience in the industry has been all over the place, but I think I’ve navigated it mostly with ease.  I’ve had a lot of good luck in terms of the people I’ve worked with and the projects I’ve been a part of, with a few glaringly awful memories thrown in. But even those were worth it. They make a great story.

Tell us about your upbringing, I believe you are from Los Angeles, yes?

Yes, I grew up in East LA County. My family is of Armenian origin, and I went to an Armenian-American private school all the way until college.  It was small and kind of insular, and I always knew I was different from the other kids, and even though I always wanted everyone to like me I also kind of enjoyed being a little weird.  There was definitely a depressive early puberty stage, but the more I embraced being an outsider, the more I felt generally accepted as I approached graduation.

What was your coming out process like and was it an easy one?

Coming out took a while for me. I always knew I was attracted to men, but I thought that was just something that made me different, gave me a bit of edge. I didn’t think about what it meant to be “gay” until I was about 20, when I had my first boyfriend and sexual experience.  Slowly I started telling my friends, parents, and siblings, all to very uniquely different responses.  It was always scary, and always rewarding, even when the response was more on the negative side.

What's life like for you now that you are in between Los Angeles and San Francisco?

Life has been pretty good! I’m based more regularly in Los Angeles these days, but I left a pretty solid family of friends up in San Francisco and I’m obsessed with them all, so that’s the main reason why I keep coming back. Living in San Francisco taught me a lot about how to create and foster community, and I have been trying to use what I’ve learned there to improve my experience in Los Angeles.  LA is a lot more spread out, and requires way more effort, but I’ve been finding my groove lately and it’s been wonderful blending the experience between both cities.

Dating? Boyfriend? Single?

No boyfriend. But not necessarily single.  My views on relationships are different than the normative, and I’m focused more on creating tribe rather than building a one-on-one relationship with a primary partner.  Though I’m not opposed to organic developments of any kind!

What would be the biggest goal you would want to get out of life?

I have a lot of goals, but ultimately it’s about creating a space for myself in this world in which I can experience magic with loved ones and be of service to my community.  The path is lengthy, but it’s becoming more clear as I get older, and things are very exciting and inspiring, despite the state of the world today.
