Sam Smith Exclaims ‘I’m just Figuring Out What it Means to be Gay.’

Sam Smith, who has never been one to shy away from being honest and upfront about his feelings in the past, still isn’t holding back in 2018 as he sat down with Sarah Jessica Parker for a revealing new interview with V Magazine.

Sam, who has seen a meteoric rise in his career over the past couple of years, finished 2017 off with a number one song (“Too Good at Goodbyes”) and a number one album to boot (The Thrill of it All) yet it hasn’t always been that easy for him as he opens up to SJP about his struggles with weight and finding himself in the gay community.

Sam says that between the release of his first album “In The Lonely Hour” and his latest, that he “became a gay man properly.”  Most importantly he adds that he’s had intimate relationships with other gay men too.

“When I wrote that first album, I was in love with a straight man, he didn’t love me back, and I was very comfortable in my longing,” he said. “With this record, I became a gay man. I started having proper relationships with men. Sometimes they were in the wrong and treated me in a bad way, and sometimes I was in the wrong.”

Sam also opened up about where he is now as a gay man, as he had some major tumbles over the past couple of years within the community including his Oscar-winning speech where he claimed to be the first openly gay man to win an Oscar and saying that apps like Grindr and Tinder were “ruining romance”, which some viewed as slut-shaming.

Sam, however, isn’t put off by any of it.  “I’m just figuring out what it means to be gay,” he said. “Also, I don’t have a lot to go by as a gay man in music: Even the George Michaels and Elton Johns weren’t out at the beginning of their careers.”

Sam has received a ton of buzz over the past two years for his dramatic weight loss, yet he still struggles with body issues today.

“When I was shooting my first music videos, I just wasn’t happy with the way I looked, so I was trying to control the way the camera moved,” he said. “I was constantly looking in the mirror, pinching my waist, weighing myself every day.”

He also talked about his new relationship (although he doesn’t say with who, but many believe it is 13 Reasons Why star Brandon Flynn) in the interview, saying ““On a personal level, I’m in a relationship right now and for the first time, I think I deserve to be happy.  I’m actually asking myself if I’m going to be writing some happy love songs soon.”
