Have you been to a same-sex marriage yet? Have you had to juggle invites from all your friends as to which one gets the toaster delivered in person and which one gets it in the mail?
Gay marriage is alive and well in the United States, well, sort of. In some parts of the nation, there of course is still opposition to two men or two women living happily ever after with government approval and benefits.
In a recent Public Opinion of Same-Sex Marriage in America, a majority support for marriage equality can be found in 44 states. Add 4 more states to the positive category where more citizens are in favor of "love is love" than opposed. Forty eight out of fifty. Who is left? Well, it's legal nationwide as of Obergefell v. Hodges June 26, 2015 . But a court ruling cannot change all opinions.
Mississippi – more are opposed to same-sex marriage than in favor of it.
Alabama – only state where a majority opposes it.
Are the results surprising? Do you feel they are true?
How do we rectify this? Is there a way we can help those that don't feel "love is love" ?
Support rose above 50% for the first time in 2011 and has not gone below that mark since then. Support rose to 60% for the first time in 2015 and has not gone below that mark since then. Support continues to rise while opposition continues to fall each year, driven in large part by a significant generational gap.
From 1988 to 2009, support for same-sex marriage increased between 1% to 1.5% per year, but thereafter support began to rise at an accelerated pace.
As of 2016, 83% of Americans aged 18 to 29 support same-sex marriage.
