The Model Who Played A Gay Man In “Call Me Maybe” Wasn’t Comfortable With The Role

A couple year ago, Carly Rae Jepson took the music world by storm with the catchy single “Call Me Maybe.”

To go along with that, she released a music video that was a simple and fun as the song that inspired it. But, what got many people’s attention was the twist ending.

The video sees Jepson fantasizing over being with this hot shirtless neighbor or hers. But when she finally gets the courage to see if he likes her back, it turns out that he’s gay!

Now, the man who played that gay neighbor is not only speaking out about the role, but saying that he wasn’t happy about it.

Holden Nowell, who played the character, says that he didn’t like all the attention that “Call Me Maybe” got him or the fact that it was a gay role.

“The fact that they had to make me gay at the end of the video … it was all very … I didn’t like being known as the gay guy in the ‘Call Me Maybe’ video. It was just something I wasn’t used to,” Nowell said in an interview with iHeartRadio Canada

“I was like, ‘I’m going to be completely honest with you. I’m not going to kiss a guy, especially for $500.’ I said, ‘I really don’t think I’m comfortable kissing a guy for a music video.”

Nowell, who’s a former model turned rapper, said that he was originally supposed to kiss Jepsen’s band member instead of flirt with him, but he wasn’t comfortable doing that.

“I said, ‘You know what? What if instead of me kissing a guy at the end of the video, what if I just give a guy my number or something like that?’”

Despite this, Nowell says he’s not homophobic. He was just uncomfortable in the role.

When the iHeartRadio Canada story released this past Thursday, he posted on Instagram that he wasn’t happy with how it depicted him.

He was an actor. It was a part and the role was a gay man. If he felt uncomfortable, why take it? You can’t be that myopic.

As an actor he should be prepared to play any role. This will make it harder for him to be employable

Clearly, that tattoo, "the sky is the limit" means nothing to him. I'd think the sky is the limit would mean that the roles he wants and the heights he will take to get there are limited, not limitless.
