The National Film Registry announced the 25 films they will be adding, some of which include iconic movies like Jurassic Park, Broadcast News, On The Town and Smoke Signals

Brokeback is the only film added that debuted in the new millennium. The others date all the way back to 1898 up until 1998.

One notable film that didn't make the cut was Crash, which beat Brokeback to win Best Motion Picture of the Year at the 2006 Academy Awards. You could hear the audible gasps in the room when Crash won as Brokeback was the odds on favorite that evening.

Brokeback Mountain still earned a ton of accolades that year, in particular from the gay community. GLAAD awarded it Outstanding Film- Wide Release while its main stars Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal scored several trophies for their acting roles including Best Kiss at the MTV Movie Awards.

The film centers around the forbidden story of two cowboys and how their relationship develops as the years go by. It has received tons of critical acclaim since its release thirteen years ago, and has an 87 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes to this day.
