Uproars Over Casting Choice Leads To Exit!

#GROAN! Well, those who threw a fit over social media got their wish. We recently informed you about the controversial casting choice where Avengers Actress, Scarlett Johansson, would portray a transgender man in the upcoming film, Rub and Tug. I had a very unpopular opinion on why people shouldn’t be raging maniacs about the casting choice an foresaw the film being pulled. Well, it’s halfway there thanks to the uproar of negativity that came with the casting.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Johansson has removed herself from the acting role in a statement to Out magazine. She tells:

“In light of recent ethical questions raised surrounding my casting as Dante Tex Gill, I have decided to respectfully withdraw my participation in the project,” Johansson said in a statement Friday to Out magazine. “Our cultural understanding of transgender people continues to advance, and I’ve learned a lot from the community since making my first statement about my casting and realize it was insensitive. I have great admiration and love for the trans community and am grateful that the conversation regarding inclusivity in Hollywood continues. According to GLAAD, LGBTQ+ characters dropped 40 percent in 2017 from the previous year, with no representation of trans characters in any major studio release. While I would have loved the opportunity to bring Dante’s story and transition to life, I understand why many feel he should be portrayed by a transgender person, and I am thankful that this casting debate, albeit controversial, has sparked a larger conversation about diversity and representation in film. I believe that all artists should be considered equally and fairly. My production company, These Pictures, actively pursues projects that both entertain and push boundaries. We look forward to working with every community to bring these most poignant and important stories to audiences worldwide.”

I doubt we’ll even see this film come to light amid the controversy. I’m happy Johansson has made a statement in support of the transgender community, but is any of this really going to help? Rub and Tug could’ve been an interesting story to see unravel, but now it’s pretty much poisoned itself. Call it quits.

  1. This is such BS! I really

This is such BS! I really wish she would continue with the film. The fact that they are making a film about such a important topic needs to be out there wether its played by trans, gay , straight, what ever, the story needs to be told.

  2. Demanding that only trans

Demanding that only trans actors play trans roles would just make producers and writers shy away from including trans characters on TV and movies. That's more trans invisibility for  the trans community. Thankfully, gay men and lesbians do not whine against straight actors playing gay characters.

  3. Everyone has to bitch about

Everyone has to bitch about something. Always waiting for something to be indignant about. It’s really pathetic.
