Sean Hayes Shares How Mom Reacted At His Coming Out To Her In 1988

Where were you in 1988? Do you remember what the gay scene was like back then where you lived?  Was there even one? What about when you were 18? Were you ready to come out? Or was the closet where you needed to be? and then some of you weren't even alive.

All of our stories are different.  No one story is more important than someone else's, but some have the ability to be heard and be influential.  I think that was the whole idea behind the "It Gets Better" campaign.

In a new Interview with People, Sean Hayes, not the Will nor the Grace of Will & Grace, opened up about how he came out to his family.

“It’s so cliché that it was during Thanksgiving weekend,” Hayes said. “My mom said I needed to go see a therapist. She wrote me a 10-page letter …

The interview touches on a couple of other items, brings us back to the late '80s, and gets around to the coming out at about the 2:05 mark.

Hayes said it did get better and his mom did come around to be supportive and loving. 

How did your coming out compare to our beloved Jack's? Of course it's not a happy ending like that for everyone. And of course this was Sean Hayes coming out to his family in 1988 and not to the world as he did in 2010.
