Shirtless Violinist Revisits The Song That Started It All: Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’

You’ve heard Hallelujah many times before. The Leonard Cohen classic has been covered by numerous artists, and everyone seems to have their favorite version. Whether you like Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright, K.D. Lang, or Pentatonix, there’s one thing you’ve just got to admit: It’s a seriously beautiful song.

I am a fan of Cohen's Hallelujah, but not always a fan of how it is done.  Will the Shirtless Violinist be a cheer or a jeer?

We hear from the Shirtless Violinist himself, Matthew, as to why he chose to do this song.

If you watched my “origin story” in last week’s video (“How To Be YouTube Famous”) then you know “Hallelujah” was the song I was playing in my living room when we had the idea to create the “Shirtless Violinist” 6 months ago. This, my friends, is what you call a Full Circle Moment.

After asking you guys what song I should cover next, your overwhelming response was “Hallelujah”, so I had to figure out how to make my version fresh and new. I guess I could have decided that playing this classic tune on a violin, without a shirt, would be original enough – but I truly feel this is a song that requires a little more depth…a little more feeling. The kind of goose-bumpy-good-vibes you can get with some human voices thrown into the mix.

So I found this lovely little group of fresh-faced youngsters called “The Sound Four” and I thought – YES! That’s it!

Have you ever seen a SOLO violin backed up by a QUARTET of singers?

I sure haven’t – so I’m super stoked to be able to present our first 4K music video to you! (Do abs look different in 4K?)

Thanks Matthew and no, we haven't heard 4 voices back up one instrument.  Maybe this is why this song is so special.

Reading some of the comments over on the Shirtless Violinist's YouTube Channel, we see that some of his followers did question him being shirtless in a church. We'll overlook it this time.  And yes, the abs do look great in 4K.

In closing, here's the video Matthew mentioned above, “How To Be YouTube Famous.”
