Turns out, 2020 is giving us something we never even considered becoming a reality, a Broadway musical version of The Nanny.
Back in the 1990s, Fran Drescher was a queen of fashion and comedy television for families. The program followed the life of a quirky Jewish nanny from Flushing, New York. In the show, Drescher took care of three upper-class children for their musical producing father, Maxwell Sheffield. And now, the show is ironically being adapted for Broadway.
According to Playbill, Marc Bruni, the director for Beautiful-The Carole King Musical, will be helming the stage production produced by Fran Drescher herself and father-son duo Scott and Brian Zeilinger. Drescher will also write the musical’s book with the help of her ex-husband Peter Marc Jacobson, the two co-created the original series in the ‘90s. Plus, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Emmy winners Rachel Bloom and Adam Schlesinger will be writing the score.
“The Nanny was a fundamental part of my childhood because it was the first time I saw an openly Jewish female protagonist on television,” said Bloom after the adaption was announced. “The story of Fran Fine, however, is a universal one that has touched the hearts of people of every race, religion and orientation. I am so proud to be using the characters established by The Nanny to tell a new story about one woman’s journey to becoming proud of who she is and what makes her different.”
Meanwhile, Drescher joked about the fact that she probably won’t be cast in the production, “We’d have to change the title to The Granny.”
Information such as a production timeline, other names to join the creative team, and casting information will be released at a later date.
