The chorus is dropping the world premiere of their documentary Gay Chorus Deep South at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York.

The film documents the chorus’s travel throughout the United States’ South during their “Lavender Pen Tour” that we reported on in 2017. The chorus decided to visit five states in the Deep South in order to bridge the gap between conservative and liberal Americans.

“The day after the election. Wednesday morning, we all woke up in a phase of disbelief,” shared Executive Director Chris Verdugo at the time. “We received an email from our board president saying we should reconsider our touring abroad.”

“We didn’t know what would happen with a Trump presidency, but we knew that it would cause a lot of strife,” he then added. “We knew that if we were already, even under the Obama administration, still under trouble in the south… we knew that the situation was only going to get worse.”

During the tour, the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, along with allies from the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, gave performances, talked in meetings, dined at community luncheons, and tried to connect with the local people. That said, their risk wasn’t met without pushback. The Chorus later had to increase security after worrying about the members and their safety.

Now, that journey will be revealed through intimate videos recorded during the tour. Gay Chorus Deep South will premiere on April 29 at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. In addition, the Chorus will perform after the world premiere.
