Remember when we had the term the nuclear family?  When was the last time you used it?  Do we still use it today or do we need to come up with another word to describe a family especially after an amazing birth occurred in Ecuador.

A transgender man has given birth after conceiving with his transgender wife. The couple have made history as the first transgender couple in South America to do so.

Fernando Machado, who was assigned female at birth and his partner Diane Rodriguez, who was assigned male at birth, welcomed their first child.

The couple who live in Ecuador have expressed their desire to have more children.

“We are the same as other families. Even though we might not have the same rights, we are the same,” Mr Machado told the BBC

Ms Rodriguez said she never thought she would have the opportunity to be a mother.

“Being a mother was never something I thought I would do because I am a transsexual,” she said.

The couple have not undergone full gender reassignment and were therefore able to conceive naturally.    – independent.co.uk

I did not know about the castration policy of Ecuador and other nations.  What a shock!   BBC.com shared with us some other facts.

Transgender pregnancy

  • Thomas Beatie, from the US state of Arizona, is often referred to as the world's first known pregnant transgender man; he gave birth in 2008 and is now a father of three
  • Trans men, assigned female at birth, often receive hormone therapy treatment, but recent studies show that this does not prevent pregnancies in the short or long-term
  • As of July 2016, 23 countries in Europe, including France, Switzerland and Finland, require sterilisation in order for a person to be legally recognised as trans
  • In the UK, the NHS funds sex changes for transgender people and offers them fertility treatment and the ability to freeze their egg and sperm.  – bbc.com

Congrats to the new family!  There is no need to answer my nuclear question above. The sharing of this supposed "First Time Ever" birth of this kind helps to put an exclamation point on the fact that we need to move on from those kind of labels, nuclear family, gay marriage, etc., and just be marriage and family.  Imagine kids growing up just knowing love and not labels.

UPDATE:

Many have yelled at us about this piece.  One said that we are as bad as OUT with their Milo piece to that I say, try reading the blog.  Others said we didn't do our research to finding out if this is the true first time a couple where both are transgender has had a child.    One twitter follower cited many of the hateful tweets we have received about this birth where people have said this is why the LGBT community is losing followers and the like.  Who would want to come forward.  And to that I say, imagine how much strength it took for this Equadorian couple to come forward. They may not be first, but they are the first to come forward and take the brunt of the hatred, along with our love and praise.
