There have been rumors of a True Blood musical in the works for some time now, but according to Deadline those rumors are now confirmed as true.

Series creator Alan Ball spoke at the pilot episode screening at Vulture Festival on Sunday and shared that he is aware of a project that’s in the works. Even better, the story focuses on Vampires trying to reveal themselves to humanity in an almost allegory to coming out as gay.

“It tells the story of vampires coming out of the closet,” Ball said. “Ultimately it really departs from the book, because people aren’t ready, and they’re too bigoted and they end up going back in to the closet.”

Ball added that the project is being worked on by composer Nathan Barr, and is currently being workshopped. What Ball didn’t share is whether or not he is involved with the project.

This will be another iteration and adaption based off of Charlaine Harris’ The Southern Vampire Mysteries.

That book series contained several LGBTQ characters such as the strong and sassy chef Lafayette Reynolds, the bisexual human-turned-vampire Tara Thornton, the bisexual vampire Eric Northman, and more.

The tv series also brought us LGBTQ characters with the most notable one being Lafayette Reynolds played by the late Nelsan Ellis (who died of complications from alcohol withdrawal in 2017).

As we wait through the workshop process, we’ll keep our fingers crossed that the stage adaption also offers plenty of LGBTQ representation.
