When Did You Choose To Be Gay?

The recent viral thread on Twitter is fighting against the idea that being gay is a choice.

British musician Simon H decided to make a joke out of the old “gay is a choice” argument. He posted on Friday that he chose to be gay on “a beautiful spring day.”

“For me it was a beautiful spring day and I just thought, “You know what, I really want to disappoint my parents, offend my church, limit my options, lose my rights, live in fear of homophobic abuse, be afraid to hold my partner’s hand…”

Of course, Twitter loves to make witty and inclusive jokes out of situations like this, so many users jumped to join the fun.

That led to many wonderful responses, such as choosing to be gay during the height of the AIDs panic, when living in homophobic households, and when already in unhappy heterosexual relationships.
