The Emmy Winning Billy Porter Is Making Us Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo In Live Action Cinderella!

“Remakes! Of Cartoons! But, Live Action! That’s what everyone wants!” I’m sure those words are countlessly said in various heavyweight Hollywood meetings. It appears we’re in a constant loop of rehashing, rebooting, and remaking endless tales, films, and television series that we’ve encountered for the last few decades. Sometimes they are a hit, like in the case of Disney’s The Lion King or Beauty and the Beast or even horror films like Dawn of the Dead. But, we have gotten God awful remakes like Footloose and Tom Cruise’s blasphemy that was The Mummy in 2017. Regardless, they still keep coming and the masses still keep watching. This next reboot is a tale as old as time… when it comes to hating your adopted family.

According to Variety, Sony Pictures is remaking Cinderella, made famous from fairytales but more importantly the king of remakes, Disney. Camila Cabello of Fifth Harmony fame is set to star in the musical as the titular character with James Corden producing. It seems a little quick for this to be remade, as Disney fantastically did a live action portrayal in 2015, but this time around everything seems a little unconventional, perhaps because of a big gender role switch. American Horror Story and Pose star, the Emmy winning Billy Porter is in talks to co-star as Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother. Yes, you heard that correctly… Porter would essentially be walking in the steps of Whitney Houston who played the dream maker in 1997 with Brandy.

While we’ve seen both Cinderella and her Fairy Godmother played by women of color previously, it would definitely be a shock factor to cast a man in the role of you know, a godmother. Would the character be gender swapped completely or would Porter don drag? There has been a slew of aggressive keyboard warriors who are severely for or against the cast of the Disney’s upcoming The Little Mermaid remake, so I’m a little curious to see how this casting choice will affect anyone who will have something to say.

Porter recently won an Emmy for his seventeen-episode portrayal of Pray Tell in Pose and has been acting since the late ‘90s, so I really don’t doubt his ability to act the heck out of whatever he’d like. So far, I’m intrigued, to say the least. Do you think Porter would make a great Fairy Godmother to Cinderella?
