The 90th Annual Academy Awards takes place tonight at 8:00 PM EST on ABC. The perennial show, which will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, honors the best of the best in filmmaking over the past year.
One of the most talked about films that has several nominations tonight is Call Me by Your Name, the Luca Guadagnino directed film about a gay romance blossoming between a seventeen year-old student and the older man hired as his father's research assistant.
The film has four nominations at tonight's ceremony: Best Picture, Best Actor (Timothee Chalamet), Best Adapted Screenplay (James Ivory) and Best Original Song (Sufjan Stevens "Mystery of Love").
Two major categories that the film failed to secure nominations in is Best Supporting Actor (Armie Hammer) and Best Achievement in Directing (Luca Guadagnino). Regardless, the film has already received close to 70 awards outside of the show tonight, but does that mean they have a chance at winning one… or anything come Oscar time?
According to GoldDerby, it looks good for CMBYN in one particular category: Best Adapted Screenplay. James picked up this award last week at the 2018 BAFTA Awards, and it looks like his continued luck will secure him Oscar gold at tonight's ceremony. They have him winning this award easily, as CMBYN is listed at the top of the pack from each expert.
For Best Actor, it may not be Timothee's night but don't count him out yet. GoldDerby's expert pool has him listed right behind who many think will win tonight: Gary Oldman for The Darkest Hour. Timothee did pick up the Best Actor award last night at the 2018 Independent Spirit Awards, however it's Gary's game to lose as he has won mostly everything up until this point. Nothing wrong with an upset though.
Same goes with Best Original Song, as it looks to be a close call between "This is Me" from The Greatest Showman and "Remember Me" from Coco. The silver lining in all of this is that if "This is Me" wins, it will be a victory for the LGBT community as Benj Pasek is nominated for writing the song. It will be a back to back win for him in this category as well, as he won for "City of Stars" from La La Land last year.
Finally: Best Picture, which looks to be heading the way of either Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Get Out and The Shape of Water based on expert predictions. So by day's end, CMBYN should secure at least one Oscar with the hopes that Timothee can pull off a major upset for Best Actor. Here's to hoping.
