“When I first got off the bus years ago, I had the strangest feeling that I’d come home.”  -Mary Ann Singleton, Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City

Netflix has just released the first look at Original Limited Series Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City premiering this summer.

I remember as a little gay boy just out of high school, I was introduced to a mini series on one of our 2 PBS channels.  We only had 5 channels total, but on one of them a story came into my home that just opened me up to a world that was new and different, yet old and historical with a flair of hope, love, regret, and hope again. Oh Anna Madrigal! Mouse!

Inspired by the books of Armistead Maupin, Netflix Original Limited Series Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City begins a new chapter in the beloved story. Mary Ann (Laura Linney) returns to present-day San Francisco and is reunited with her daughter Shawna (Ellen Page) and ex-husband Brian (Paul Gross), twenty years after leaving them behind to pursue her career.
Fleeing the midlife crisis that her picture-perfect Connecticut life created, Mary Ann is quickly drawn back into the orbit of Anna Madrigal (Olympia Dukakis), her chosen family and a new generation of queer young residents living at 28 Barbary Lane.

I’m all set for some nostalgia, but very excited that they are adding to the story and not remaking anything.  But will it be all new?  Or will it be a simple re-loop of the same plot occurrences and sway too similar story lines like Star Wars, Jurassic Park, and others have done.

One of our writers has loved covering the development of the return of “Tales” as we all are excited about its return.
Who are you excited to see?
Are you hoping for more character development of our “old” favorites or are you wanting to see how new characters interact with the beloved San Francisco?
