The chances of 100 plus out LGBTQ athletes at the 2020 Summer Olympics games in Tokyo, Japan could actually happen.
Although the 2018 Winter Olympics only had 15 out LGBTQ athletes (doubled that from the 2014 games in Sochi), the Summer Olympics numbers are much higher and could see some major LGBTQ representation in two years.
Let's breakdown the numbers. The 2012 Summer Olympics in London had 23 out athletes. That number nearly doubled at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio where there were 56. That is a 143 percent increase between the two, which is truly staggering.
In order to hit the 100 plus amount, there would need to be a 79 percent increase between 2016 and 2020, which, given how it skyrocketed between 2012 and 2016 with a percentage that is almost doubled at 143, means the likelihood of this happening is quite large.
Even the Winter Olympics numbers increased 114 percent between 2014 and 2018, so the possibility of this happening and to see over 100 out LGBTQ athletes at the upcoming games would not only be exciting but a truly momentous occasion for our community.
