For the first time in California’s history, the Pride flag is flying over the State Capitol. Governor Gavin Newsom tweeted out the momentous occasion in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Stonewall.

The flag flies below the three flags that are always seen in Sacramento, the American flag, the California State flag, and the POW/MIA flag honoring prisoners of war and veterans missing in action.
In 2017, California became the first state in the union to adopt curriculum for grades K-8 that requires history and social studies to include achievements of LGBTQ+ leaders as well as people with disabilities.
Last month, parents from the Rocklin School District who opposed the adoption kept over 700 students from school in protest of the new curriculum.
A historically progressive state, California has been at the forefront of LGBTQ+ rights.
Governor Newsom said in a statement:
In California, we celebrate and support our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community’s right to live out loud – during Pride month and every month. By flying the pride flag over the State Capitol, we send a clear message that California is welcoming and inclusive to all, regardless of how you identify or who you love.
It’s a great day to be PROUD in the Golden State!
