Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell has new novel coming out in August titled, Is There Still Sex in the City?, that has already been picked up by both Paramount Television and Anonymous Content. The forthcoming television show, which Bushnell is set executive produce and write the pilot script for, follows the lives of New York City women navigating their way through friendships, dating, marriage and their sex lives. There is a stark difference between the original Sex and the City and this new iteration, and that is that the women featured are in their 50’s and 60’s.

“The original Sex and the City book and series served as a groundbreaking touchstone for an entire generation of women, myself included,” Nicole Clemens, president of Paramount TV, told Deadline. “We’re thrilled to be able to continue that conversation from the underrepresented point of view of women in their 50s and answer the question with, ‘Yes! There is more sex in the city!’

Bushnell is clearly amped about the possibility of another dazzling quartet of women inspiring a generation; “It didn’t used to be this way. At one time, 50-something meant the beginning of retirement—working less, spending more time on your hobbies, with your friends, who like you were sliding into a more leisurely lifestyle. In short, retirement age folks weren’t meant to do much of anything but get older and a bit heavier. They weren’t expected to exercise, start new business ventures, move to a different state, have casual sex with strangers, and start all over again. But this is exactly what the lives of a lot of 50 and 60-something women look like today and I’m thrilled to be reflecting the rich, complexity of their reality on the page and now on the screen,” Bushnell told Deadline.

The description of Is There Still Sex in the City? (released August 6th, 2019) reads like what could be the definitive sequel to the cultural touchstone that Sex and the City truly was. ” Set between the Upper East Side of Manhattan and a country enclave known as The Village, Is There Still Sex in the City? gathers Bushnell’s signature short, sharp, satirical commentaries on the love and dating habits of middle-aged men and women as they continue to navigate the ever-modernizing world of relationships”.
