Chick-fil-A Already Backtracking On Donation Changes?

Unfortunately, what we all expected to happen has happened. But, we didn’t expect it to happen this fast. (We mean, they really couldn’t even wait three days?)

Earlier this week, we shared with you the news that fried chicken-based fast food chain Chick-fil-A would be ending its donations to the Salvation Army and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Both charities have previously expressed anti-LGTBQ and anti-same-sex marriage views. Instead, Chick-fil-A announced its plans to focus on charities surrounding education, homelessness, and hunger. That said, the Christian-based company, apparently, isn’t ruling out going back to these charities or other anti-LGBTQ organizations.

In response to being asked by Vice whether the company is taking a new pro-LGBTQ stance, Chick-fil-A President and COO Tim Tassopoulos stated that the company wouldn’t rule out the FCA, Salvation Army, and other anti-LGBTQ organizations in the future.

Specifically, he said: “No organization will be excluded from future consideration–faith-based or non-faith-based.”

This contradicts the public announcement shared just this past Monday saying that Chick-fil-A would be “more focused giving approach to provide additional clarity and impact with the causes it supports.” But does such as quick turnaround constitute “clarity and impact” or just stir up confusion?

As we hypothesized in our coverage of the Chick-fil-A announcement, the policy change was a thinly veiled publicity stunt to change public perception of the company. The company saw a year of several airports rejecting venues for the food chain, Boston’s mayor expressing his plan to fight the company’s expansion into his city, and the first UK establishment being shut down 8 days into its running. In a year, Chick-fil-A saw the direct effect the public’s anti-LGBTQ perception of the company had on its expansion. Though, the company chose not to comment when asked if this was the cause.

So as we expressed in the last post about Chick-fil-A, this isn’t a total win. Just a momentary one. So as with many LGBTQ-related initiatives, we must stay vigilant and aware. Chick-fil-A is not our ally, and they don’t pretend to be.

  1. Chick-For-Nazis will always support the right wing extremist terrorist agenda and so will always fly back to where they started. It’s what conservatives do. It’s why the RepubliKKKans are so like ISIS and al-Qaeda: Right wing terrorist extremists busy going back to the 1300’s where it is easier to control the uninformed masses. Chick -fi-Lie has always tasted like bitter old chicken to me. Deep fried roadkill.

  2. So Tassopoulos’ quote is “No organization will be excluded from future consideration–faith-based or non-faith-based.” Devin Randall interprets that to mean that the company wouldn’t rule out the FCA, Salvation Army, and other anti-LGBTQ organizations in the future. That doesn’t seem to be what he said at all.
