America and the entire free world lost a true friend and champion last week as the iconic United States Congressman, Elijah Cummings passed away of natural causes. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Cummings was a loyal native son. He resided in and served the city of Baltimore for decades, though he received his Political Science degree in his youth from the famed HBCU, Howard University in Washington, D.C., and went on to earn his law degree from the University of Maryland.
A beloved figure in politics, Cummings dedicated his life to being the voice for marginalized people. His work encompassed creating programs for quality healthcare and education, as well as ecology efforts for cleaner air and water.
Serving on countless boards and commissions, Congressman Cummings got dragged into the underbelly of the political fray recently due to a highly contentious feud with Donald Trump. Cummings, at the time of his death, was the Chairman of the Committee of Oversight and Reform. He had played an active role in pursuing the checks and balances on the Trump administration. The committee’s primary purpose is to investigate reported frauds, abuses of power, improprieties, or illegal activities in government.
Trump was not a fan of Cummings, who, in recent months, along with Nancy Pelosi, had launched an Impeachment inquiry against the current President. Trump lashed out at Cummings in a now-infamous Tweet, denigrating the beloved Congressman and the inner-city Baltimore district over which Cummings presided.
Far too regal and civilized to engage Trump in a Twitter war, Cummings didn’t have to; The Baltimore Sun and CNN’s Victor Blackwell tore Trump a new one in brilliant responses to his nasty and juvenile insult against the city of Baltimore.
Now, with the passing of Elijah Cummings, comes news that he may get the last word after all. In the most delicious, ultimate act of genius shade, reportedly on his death bed, the Congressman finalized and signed two official subpoenas aimed at Donald Trump’s xenophobic immigration policies.
According to CNN, a Democratic committee aide confirmed that just hours before the Congressman passed, staffers drove the subpoenas to Baltimore for Cummings’ signature. His passion for making not only America but the world a better place was an ambition he pursued until his last moments of life.
Elijah Cummings will be greatly missed, and the history books will be kind to him as the legend and legacy of his life’s work grows more substantial in the absence of his physical presence.
