A gay man from Queens says he was attacked because he wouldn’t perform oral intercourse on a stranger.

As Carlos, a resident of the Jackson Heights neighborhood in Queens, New York told Gay City News, he was recently the victim of an attack. Around 2:30 a.m. on October 13, Carlos was walking home from a friend’s house. He was then approached by a stranger who flashed his genitals. The man then asked Carlos repeatedly to perform oral sex on him.

Carlos responded, “No,” several times. This made the stranger angry and the interaction became violent. Carlos says that the man hit him in the head before stealing his phone and backpack. While the man was distracted with Carlos’ phone, Carlos ran to seek help from a nearby car.

“When I got to the car, he kicked me and I fell,” Carlos told Gay City News. “When I fell, he kept hitting me on my back and kicking me on the back. The guy in the car rolled his window and said something to him, but the man said I was trying to rob him — like he was the victim.”

Carlos screamed for the car driver to call 911 before eventually breaking free of his attacker. The victim then ran to a nearby police van for help. The police later found the attacker, a 26-year-old Bronx resident named Jelani Stewart, by tracking the GPS of Carlos’ phone. Jelani was then arrested on charges of robbery and public lewdness.

“I’m injured right now,” said Carlos to Gay City News, “but I have to come to work. Other than that, I would have been in the hospital. I have back pain, stomach pain… my nose, my eyes, my ears, my head. I took some pain medication.”
