By now, most of us have heard the story that hackers used data collected from Facebook to sway votes in the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election. Now, one man who was a part of the process is speaking up.
The Guardian has recently released a video interview with Christopher Wylie whom the Guardian refers to as, "the gay Canadian vegan who somehow ended up creating Steve Bannon’s psychological warfare mindfuck tool.”
For more context, Wylie was a part of the data analytics firm called Cambridge Analytica. Wylie is revealing that the company took data from millions of Facebook profiles in 2014 and then used that data to created a system for showing fake news articles to change the public opinion on multiple issues.
Or, as Wylie puts it:
"Instead of standing in the public square and saying what you think, and letting people come and listen to you and have that shared experience as to what your narrative is, you are whispering into the ear of each and every voter, and you may be whispering one thing to this voter and one thing to another voter."
Wylie says that this entire plan was run by Steve Bannon and financially backed by billionaire Robert Mercer.
In the interview, found below, Christopher Wylie says that he’s remorseful for his involvement in the project and also that he sees how dangerous such acts can be.
