Girls Just Wanna Have Fun! Jane Lynch & Cyndi Lauper Are Bringing Us The ‘The Golden Girls’ Reboot We’ve Been Dying For

It goes without saying that the iconic Miami quartet that we know as The Golden Girls served as the template for many future legendary sitcoms with four female leads. From Designing Women, to Hot In Cleveland (which ironically featured original “Girl” Betty White), and onto Girlfriends, and Living Single, there is no dispute that Dorothy, Blanche, Sophia and Rose were the original trendsetters. Since the sun set on Sex and the City‘s final film, we have been yearning for another quartet to bring us equal parts heart and hilarity, and it looks like we may have gotten our wish, with a twist. Word leaked this weekend that a reboot of The Golden Girls is a go at Netflix.

People.com reports today that Glee star Jane Lynch is partnering up with music and composing icon Cyndi Lauper to make sitcom magic. According to the outlet, Lynch confirmed the buzz at the Creative Arts Emmys saying she and Lauper are both going to co-star in a series described as “kind of a Golden Girls for today.” Lynch confirmed that the series has been picked up by Netflix and will feature the actress and music titan as two single women that are “looking for their next act.”. Lynch mentions that there will be two further roles cast as well.

“I pitched a show to Netflix and they bought it,” she told reporters after winning the Emmy for guest actress in a comedy series for her role on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. “I don’t know if I can even tell you, but it’s with Cyndi Lauper, so there!

Buzz leaked today that storied comic and one of the women behind Seinfeld, Carol Leifer was also going to have a hand in this reboot. Based on the pic found on her Facebook page, she is officially on board. “It’s official, heading out next with a new half-hour comedy, starring Jane Lynch and Cyndi Lauper,” Leifer wrote in July. “A writer’s dream to work with these two legends. Can’t wait to see where we land…

Personally, I would love see a bit of a casting update for one of our favorite foursomes this time around, possibly making the cast a bit more diverse. Perhaps casting someone like the the absolutely divine Retta? Or perhaps an icon like Lynda Carter, Jamie Lee Curtis or Raquel Welch as part of the cast? Any of these ladies would be a welcome return to our television screens after being gone far too long.

Now true Golden Girls fans will recall that Elaine Stritch detailed a legendary story about not being cast in The Golden Girls (in the role that eventually went to Bea Arthur) during her divine Broadway one woman show Elaine Stritch-At Liberty. If we are looking for a true nod to the legendary Broadway icon that almost headlined the sitcom, Patti LuPone would be an absolute genius addition to this casting wishlist.

Who would you love to see star alongside Lynch and Lauper in this almost sure-fire hit reboot? Leave your thoughts in the comments

  1. Catherine O’Hara would be amazing as any of the three! I can see her playing a Rose and then a Blanche but definitely a Dorothy!

Get her on this show! Even if she played Moira as an extension of her character on Schitt’s Creek! That character is spicy like Blanche was!

  3. Linda Carter, Jamie Lee Curtis, Linda Lavin, Jacklyn Smith, Cherill Ladd, Lindsay Wagner, Stephanie Powers, Leslie Ann Warren, as mother wouldn’t it be great Barbara Bain? from the original Mission Imposible. So many good actresses from those good old days.
