A lesbian couple in Idaho is stepping into politics to fight for a better future for their 12-year-old son, and they’re hoping to make the state a safer, more affordable place for families like theirs.

Imagine living in a state where LGBTQ+ rights are constantly under pressure, raising a child you want to protect, and realizing that waiting for someone else to fix things simply isn’t an option. For married lesbian couple Karlie and Amanda Easley, that realization has turned into a run for political office in Idaho.

And honestly, sometimes the best motivation for change is wanting a better future for your own kid.

Two Moms, One Mission

Karlie Easley is running for Idaho State Senate, while her wife, Amanda Easley, is campaigning for House Seat 22B. Speaking with LGBTQ Nation, the couple explained how they decided to step into politics, despite the challenges that come with being LGBTQ+ candidates in a conservative state.

Before making the leap, they talked to their 12-year-old son about their plans. His question? Would their family become a target?

It’s a heartbreaking thing for a child to have to consider when his moms simply want to make their community a better place. But rather than backing away, the couple found even more reason to keep going.

They also saw a need for Democratic candidates willing to challenge Republican incumbents. If they wanted change, they couldn’t just wait for someone else to show up.

Idaho Politics vs. Everyday Idahoans

Idaho has become a battleground for LGBTQ+ rights, with controversial policies and proposals sparking concern among queer residents and allies. Even measures that don’t ultimately take effect can leave people wondering whether their communities are safe and welcoming.

But the Easleys say the people they meet on the campaign trail aren’t necessarily as divided as political headlines might suggest.

“People are a lot more in the middle than they want us to believe,” Karlie told LGBTQ Nation.

She described meeting voters who identified as staunch Republicans but appreciated that she took the time to knock on their doors and listen to their concerns. Some even told her they planned to vote for her because of that willingness to engage.

Amanda added that when voters bring up LGBTQ+ rights, it’s often because they want to protect them, rather than restrict them.

And that right there is a reminder that political labels don’t always tell the whole story about a person.

More Than LGBTQ+ Rights

The Easleys aren’t running on LGBTQ+ issues alone. Their priorities include fully funding public schools, improving teacher pay, making housing more affordable, and repealing Idaho’s grocery tax.

They’re also pushing to protect reproductive freedom and reinstate Medicaid expansion amid concerns about healthcare access, provider shortages, and rural hospitals struggling to stay open.

These are issues that affect families across the state, regardless of who they love or how they identify.

For the Easleys, running for office isn’t just about challenging lawmakers. It’s about making Idaho a place where their son and other children can grow up with better opportunities, stronger healthcare, and fewer reasons to fear for their families.

Because at the end of the day, these two moms aren’t asking for the world. They’re fighting for a state where their family can feel safe, their neighbors can thrive, and the next generation has a better shot at the future.

And if that means stepping into politics themselves, then honey, they’re ready to get to work.
