There is something undeniably magical about dropping your bags, stripping off your everyday armor, and stepping into the sun-drenched sanctuary that is the Island House Key West Resort. This legendary all-male, clothing-optional resort isn’t just a place to sleep—it is a state of mind.</p
For gay men looking for the ultimate mix of unbridled relaxation, high-energy socializing, and complete freedom, Island House is the gold standard. And as we pack our bags for Key West Bear Weekend (Wednesday October 28 to November 1) overlapping with the wild Key West Halloween celebrations, it’s time to talk about why we return to this slice of paradise every chance we get.
What is Island House? The Basics for the Uninitiated
If you’ve never experienced the magic of Island House, think of it as the ultimate luxury playground designed exclusively for gay men. Located at 1129 Fleming Street, it functions as a private, secure compound featuring lush, tropical courtyards, a heated pool, two Jacuzzis, a sauna, a steam room, a fully equipped gym, and a world-class tanning deck.
At the center of it all is the legendary 24-hour poolside café and bar. Whether you are grabbing a midnight burger, sipping a crisp cocktail at sunrise, or chatting with travelers from all over the globe, the energy is always welcoming. Best of all, it’s clothing-optional—meaning you can shed your inhibitions alongside your swimsuit the second you walk through the gates.
Why Is It So Immensely Popular?
1. Unapologetic Freedom and Comfort
In a world that can still feel heavy and hyper-vigilant, Island House offers a rare, radical sense of comfort. Yes, “things happen”—spontaneous connections, flirtations, and unforgettable memories are part of the ecosystem—but the overriding vibe is one of effortless ease. You can lounge by the pool for hours with a book, hit the gym, or join a lively happy hour without ever feeling judged. It’s an environment built on mutual respect and pure indulgence.
2. Radical Gay Acceptance
Key West as a whole pioneered the “One Human Family” philosophy, but Island House takes queer hospitality to an elite level. It’s a space where you can fully exhale. There’s no pretense, no awkwardness—just a massive community of like-minded men celebrating each other. It’s no wonder it regularly tops lists as one of the best gay resorts in the world.
3. The Way to a Man’s Heart…
You definitely have to go out in Key West and experience the wonderful restaurants that are there. With that said, you’re gonna find yourself sitting poolside at the Island House for every meal. Its kitchen and its staff produce some of the best food I’ve had in Key West with a quickness and a smile. The drinks by the pool are very hard to beat for taste and quality. Just a heads up, make a reservation to get away some nights because you will get sucked in to being at the Island House for all your meals when you’re in Key West.
Fall Magic: Bear Week & Halloween Madness
While Island House is a dream 365 days a year, autumn in Key West turns the volume all the way up.
-
Bear Week Takeover: When Bear Week arrives, the resort transforms into a high-energy hub of furry camaraderie. With special events and packed pool parties, the atmosphere is electric, welcoming, and endlessly fun.

-
Halloween: Transitioning straight into Key West’s legendary Halloween and having Island House as your home base is the ultimate luxury, go crazy on Duval Street and then retreat to your slice of paradise behind private gates.
Why We Keep Going Back
At the end of the day, we keep returning to Island House because it captures the true essence of gay travel: community, comfort, and celebration. It’s a place where lifelong friendships are forged over poolside drinks, where stress melts away in the steam room, and where you are always free to be completely, authentically yourself.
Whether you’re catching up with the Bar Magazine crew during Bear Week or recovering from a wild Halloween costume party, Island House isn’t just where we stay—it’s where we feel most at home.

Editor’s Note – Do You Have to “Participate”?
Since I moved to Florida in 2013, I believe I’ve gone to Key West about 8 times and have stayed at Island House during 5 of those visits (I’m not going to bring my parents or work-wife to stay there). And what happens at a clothing-optional gay men’s resort? What happens at bear events? Yeah, all of that happens, but you don’t have to.
Granted, I believe many go to enjoy the company and pleasures of others and to be buck naked and care free, but, to be honest, I’ve not done either one while staying there. I’ve worn some smaller bathing suits than I would wear lake side with Nana, but never totally ass naked.
And as for the men, I’ve enjoyed their company, poolside and in the water with drinks, but those were the only fluids to mention. Sure, I may get my rocks off (probably not my suit) some day, but it’s not my goal and I still enjoy my time at Island House. Now if you are going to be the captain of the fluid exchange brigade, woot woot! Game on! and that’s all fine, too.
It takes all kinds to make the world go round and all kinds show up in gay paradise. I’m there for the food, the drinks, the relaxation, the resort, the poolside massages (book one!), to hang with friends, to make new friends, to just be me, to just be.
See you there.
