Lady Gaga Continues to Follow in Barbra Streisand’s Footsteps With New Role

It looks like Lady Gaga is caught in a Babs Romance as she follows in Barbra Streisand’s footsteps once again. According to Newsday, Rosie O’Donnell shared with the audience at The Paramount this weekend that Mother Monster herself will take on the role of Fanny Brice in Funny Girl, the role that jump started Babs’ career. Streisand earned an Oscar for her role. O’Donnell will play the mother role in Funny Girl.

Has Gaga found a formula following the lead of musical royalty?

The news comes on opening weekend for A Star is Born, a remake of the 1976 film that earned Streisand tons of praise. Already there is award-season buzz for Lady Gaga as she shined in the film with original music. The film had $42 million opening! If she does equally well in Funny Girl could this mean an EGOT for Stefani Germanotta? She’s already nabbed a Golden Globe for her work on American Horror Story: Hotel.

Perhaps this Instagram photo was foreshadowing?

  1. I agree. Funny Girl isn’t the

I agree. Funny Girl isn't the greatest musical ever written. Of course it has a marvelous score, but the libretto isn't that good. Having done research on Fanny Brice for an article about her, I learned that Funny Lady is actually closer to her real life than the previous show. To make the stage version work, you need a dynamic performer: aka, Streisand. However, having seen two productions without Streisand, one of which, a bus and truck company, was decent and then a semi-professional production that was only passable, I give Rosie and Lady Gaga huge snaps for this. Gaga is a dynamic performer (I saw her in concert last year and it was incredible) and she'll make Fanny Brice her own! Kudos to she and Rosie!
