One Man Hopes to End Discrimination on Hookup Apps

We’ve all seen it. “No fats, no femmes, no Asians, white only” the list goes on and on. It’s one of the most topical points of discrimination among online dating and hook up apps. Maybe you’ve even felt this rejection in other areas of your life.

Late last year, Chappy App launched in the hopes to rid the effects of discrimination users feel when looking for a match.

Statements such as the ones above may be confused for preference, but in reality, they create hostility and division among the LGBTQ community, further perpetuating the stereotypes that we are all superficial.

Well, one particular guy has had it! Sinakhone Keodara, CEO and founder of the Asian Entertainment Television company, has had enough.

Keodara posted a call on Twitter in hopes of spearheading a class action lawsuit against hookup app giant Grindr. Keodara is fed up with the app allowing users to write ‘no Asians’ or ‘not interested in Asians’ or ‘I don’t find Asians attractive’ in their profiles. Again, is this preference or racism?

Keodara’s goal is to find men in all 50 states to join him as co-plaintiffs and hopefully bring down Grindr for their lack of attention to this issue. He hopes to speak up for all the Asian men who have “been offended, humiliated, degraded and dehumanized.”

Just last week we reported about the Muscle Bear Facebook group that discriminated against new group members by saying:

If you are Asian or African, do not join the group because it will be blocked from this group.

Super cute, guys!

It’s obvious that every single person has a bias, but what everyone should also have is a filter. Just because you’re thinking it or wishing it, why would you degrade or ridicule others? It’s a matter of common decency. Trust me—if you’re a d*ck, no one’s gonna wanna f*ck you anyway!

Let’s see where this Grindr lawsuit is headed. Grindr has not responded publicly to Keodara’s post. Does this have potential to create change for all apps?

  1. I disagree with some of these

I disagree with some of these comments.  We all have preferences, but to publicly state in your ad "No blacks, asians, etc." is going over the line.  If they're not interested then they don't have to reply or politely say they don't think they're not a match.

  2. This is utterly ridiculous.

This is utterly ridiculous. These apps and sites are for sex. We all have preferences and should not be punished for expressing them for expediency. Maybe this person should calm the hell down and suck it up. Not everyone is going to find everyone attractive and that’s life. Threatening to sue a company over freedom of speech is ludicrous. Grow up.

  4. I advocate that ethnic

I advocate that ethnic labeling be removed from online sites.  Why do we need to know a person's ethnicity?  What possible difference does it make?  Of course we could advocate the same thing for every other parameter that society (that's us, guys), tries to use to slot and label us…

  5. Sadly, the gay community has

Sadly, the gay community has become something of a caste system and is proliferated with racism.  Remember the NoH8 campaign?  That, as it turns out, was simply for a profile photo.  Between the overall exclusion of Asians, Blacks and other minorities as well as those who support the GOP — The vitriol is palpable.  I have never seen a community so negative and cruel — It's embarassing.

  6. Living in NYC I’ve seen these

Living in NYC I’ve seen these racial “requirements” from all kinds of guys on Grindr. Why is it only a problem when white guys do it? I’ve seen plenty of POC guys say “no Asians”, as well as “no blacks”, and even the occasional “no whites”. Stating stuff like that on you profile is stupid when you can just chose to ignore people. I can’t really see this class action going anywhere.

  8. How about a class action

How about a class action lawsuit to sue this idiot and everyone else that tries to tell gay men who to have sex with. for sexual harassment. #MeToo.

  9. Every time one of these

Every time one of these articles pops up(as they frequently do) there is mention of  “No fats, no femmes, no Asians, white only” and never a mention of "bros only, no bottoms, must have transportation or no tweakers, fems or tops only".  There are a butt load of preferences on these quick hook up sites that never come up.  Of course none of those come up because the people writing them are too busy trying to make Gay, White Males into cross burning racist.  Getting blamed for electing Trump to causing the rise in hiv cases in the Black community.  We get enough hate from the homophobes already.  We don't need it from other parts of the LGBT community.  I would never hook up with the author of this piece.  Not because of his race but because he wrote this race baiting crap.

OMG, I was just at a rally the other day where they were burning crosses in front of a fat person's house, for reals. They are using the no fats, fems, Asian argument to tie you with cross burning?

"Getting blamed for electing Trump to causing the rise in hiv cases in the Black community."  Is this a complete sentence? And we were just talking about whites burning crosses, so I guess whites are to blame for electing trump and the rise of HIV in ….? I do agree about the trump thing, but have not seen anything on the HIV concern you mentioned.  Please provide a source.

Buddy, why don't we add to the conversation and say, yes, these are all valid points, but we need to also "mention the 'bros only, no bottoms, must have transportation or no tweakers, fems or tops only.'  There are a butt load of preferences on these quick hook up sites that never come up."

We should be adding to the conversation instead of throwing insults. But for most, it's easier to degrade and point fingers than to converse in a meaningful manner about a topic.
