Over at Boy Culture, Matt Rettenmund has done the hard work and ranked what he considers “History’s 225 Greatest Gay-Porn Stars.”
I know, I know…it’s hard work but someone’s got to do it.
Rettenmund ranked the first 40 in order, and then the other 185 adult performers are included and listed in alphabetical order.
As they say, “It’s an honor just to be nominated…”
Now, in all honesty, I’ll admit my knowledge of gay-porn performers is much more limited than Rettenmund, who earlier in his career worked as a gay-porn industry professional for publications like Torso, Honcho, Playguy and Mandate.
As Boy Culture points out, gay men trying to figure themselves out back in the 1980s and 90s didn’t have much in terms of “societal instruction on what happens when two guys fall in love, or even lust.” So, pornography was about the only source we had for how this all might work.
I remember some of these guys from videos my first boyfriend had back in the 1980s, but I’m not so good with names in terms of today’s adult performers.
Rettenmund based his choices on overall impact of the performer’s career, longevity and any ‘groundbreaking’ status they may have. He also admits “the upper part of the list is top-heavy with classic performers,” but adds, “I think that is as it should be.”

Hakken – yes, they are. Did you click over to Rettenmund’s list? They aren’t in his Top 10, but they are in his “History’s 225 Greatest Gay-Porn Stars.” I wrote the article, and purposefully included Camp and Wolf (as they were on the list) to give coverage to those who weren’t in the Top 10, but younger audiences know today. The Top 10 is, as Rettenmund admits, a bit heavy on the more ‘classic’ porn stars. But I wasn’t going to reproduce Rettenmund’s entire list here. That wouldn’t be fair since he did all of his research. Click over to his post – there’s a LOT of info there.
