From Judy Garland to Cher, our drag queens have always made a statement when representing our favorite divas, be it on stage or on screen. One legend that has been sorely under represented is Hollywood siren Lauren Bacall, who with her lengthy acting resume and throaty and signature voice, was perfect to be spoofed by a drag queen. Would they be up for the challenge of taking on this icon of Hollywood’s true Golden Age though?
Sherry Vine has taken on the challenge and then some, with her parody of Bacall’s famed High Point Coffee advertisements from the 1970’s. Complete with true vintage feel, Vine’s advertisement for Low Point Coffee takes both pays homage to Bacall’s kitsch-tastic advertisements, but manages to work in some of her patented Sherry Vine humor (complete with requisite and hilarious bathroom gags). Guest starring LA nightlife personality (and frequent Vine collaborator) Mario Diaz and edited by Kain O’Keefe, Vine gets every last detail down to perfection, including the vintage style fashion, very similar to what Bacall herself wore in the commercial.
Bacall’s High Point Coffee advertisements are that of Hollywood lore. From her fabulous elocution on words like “flavor” to the relatable phrase “my favorite time of day is night”, Bacall was able to rocket this short lived product into the advertising legend stratosphere, based on “flavah”, among other things.
