Earlier this week, we shared with you that FIFA was looking into fans of team Mexico after they yelled out anti-gay slurs during a World Cup match.
Now, it looks like FIFA has decided to give the team a fine because of its fans.
FIFA has fined the Mexican football federation over its fans chanting the word “puto” during the World Cup match against Germany.
At the match, where Mexico won 1-0, fans chanted the anti-gay slur and FIFA later opened disciplinary hearings to investigate the situation.
They later announced that they’d be issuing a $10,000 fine on the Mexican football federation.
After this outcome, the players have asked fans to stop calling out the term and stop being so disruptive during games.
“To all Mexican fans in the stadiums, don’t shout ‘Puto,’” Mexican striker Javier Hernandez posted on Instagram. “Let’s not risk another sanction.”
This isn’t the first time that players have done so, however, as they released an official statement in a 2016 video with the message that fans should stop using anti-gay slurs at matches.
If it didn’t work then, we wonder if it’ll work now.
Mexico’s next match is against South Korea and should be airing at the time that this article publishes.
