The Woods Campground Owner Accused Of Sexual Assault

Patrick Gremling, the 54 year-old owner of The Woods Campground in the Pocono Mountains, was arrested Sunday for the alleged sexual assault of a minor on the resort property when the alleged victim was “middle school age” in late 2011. (Sources have indicated that the alleged victim was allegedly a family member who will not be identified in this article). The Pocono Record reports that the accuser (who is now an adult) reported Gremling to police last Friday. Investigators wiretapped a 32-minute phone call between the accuser and Gremling, who reportedly made “several admissions” and was arrested shortly after.

The report goes on to state that after being brought to the resort to prepare the property for the winter and that “the child spent the night in a camper after the work was done. They described to police the pajamas they wore and the couch they slept on, where the alleged assault took place. Gremling had touched the child inappropriately once before at a home in New Jersey in 2009, the accuser told police. He said the same thing both times: “Never tell anyone.”

Additionally, this is not the first time that Gremling has had interaction with someone underage. A source contacted me to provide information that several years ago, Gremling also allegedly tried to “sneak someone under age into (the venue will not be named)”. According to my source, Gremling asked my source if they could assist in getting someone underage into the unnamed venue after security for the venue noticed that the person Gremling attempted to enter with was underage. They advised that they felt that “he had no respect for me at my job” and that “an owner should know better”.

Early last year, Gremling gave an interview to Woodall’s Campground Magazine. As resident of the Poconos area as a child, Gremling purchased the former hunting campground 17 years ago. He told the publication at the time “I always loved throwing parties, and I love the outdoors and camping with my husband. At The Woods, we have fun. I do my best when I’m developing a party atmosphere for our themed weekends. Gay men like to let loose, forget about their everyday job, and act like a kid again. We try to develop a community where they can be themselves.”

A message left for The Woods went unanswered at press time. This article will be updated accordingly should

  1. The Woods worked hard to keep this quiet. Looks like it worked since no comments here in almost 2 years.
But now we should all know Patrick Gremling pled guilty in PA. Yes dear Woods campers, he admitted guilt. Bargained down two charges, guilty plea to the third. You can find the info on Carbon County court website. His lawyers keep pushing off sentencing, so who knows when he will see justice.
Maybe for that reason the State of NJ (where he allegedly ALSO molested a child) proceeded in June of 2024 with their own charges. As of June 14 he was incarcerated in Ocean County. You can look THAT up on Ocean County NJ Inmate Search. Booking number 15-230892. Make sure to check off the ‘include past inmates’ box since I am sure his lawyers will be fast to bail his guilty-in-PA ass off to the relative safety of house arrest or whatever he is doing while PA takes their sweet time sentencing him.
Enjoying your delightful summer of sun and fun at Woody’s favorite playland, campers?

  2. My partner and I have been going to The Woods for the past 3 summers and truly love the place. Pat always treated us and others with respect each time we encountered him. It is so sad to learn about all of this just a couple weeks ago. I most certainly do not condone such pathetic behavior, but I will miss the personable Pat that we once knew of, and his familiar face hosting the July 4th weekend pool games and more. We were just there 5 nights this past weekend over the 4th and it was different at the pool this holiday. No activities, no daytime pool mc. Just tunes playing and not a single word out of the guys mouth playing the beats. Sad. We will most certainly continue going 20+ days of camping each summer there going forward. After this season shocker for everyone, I have no doubt that management will regroup over the winter and move on without Pat. They will have to. It’s a beautiful place with outstanding facilities. ALL of the people who work there work very hard to keep us safe, entertained, fed, and happy. Very very professional team. Those of you sorry debbie-downer bastards can say all the nasty lies you want about The Woods, the actions of one very terrible individual does NOT define the true genuine community that me and my partner have found there. We have nothing but love for the other owners/partners/staff. We’ve been to a number of competitor gay/lgbtq campgrounds in the U.S. and The Woods really is the very best. If you want to go to a piece of shit place that DOES have rampant shenanigans going on, go to Hillside where they are not on the up and up in our opinion. Those of you stupid, ignorant, man-whore dumbasses will be happier there. Just leave all of us with brains alone. Go F**k yourselves.

  3. I started going to The Woods about 2 years after it opened. I thought…at last! a place I can come to in the summer. Hang out and relax with mostly my peers (older crowd of gay men, 40-ish and up, bears, etc) and just enjoy. A fun community of PLUs (people like us). I watched as it became more successful and started to grow and expand. Good For Them and good for the gay community I thought. Then one year a filmmaker from Ptown used The Woods for one of his movies. Again…good for them and good for us. I was looking forward to this summer finally free of mask restrictions. Oh well!!! I can’t in good conscience patronize a place with this kind of dark cloud over it. A shame for the employees and other campers who really enjoy being here. From what I have read so far, seems like there is going to be a big exodus unless The Woods can convince everyone that any association with Patrick on any level is totally dissolved. Not to mention the fact that he has totally confirmed for homophobes that think we’re predatory perverts trying to recruit. Shame on you Patrick! I hope you realize the consequences of indulging your sickness goes way beyond you being charged as a pedophile. For those who will still go to The Woods, do they now have to be concerned about harassment or possible violence? There is definitely however small a MAGA/Trump supporter presence in the area.

  5. Anybody have an update on this? I thought his indictment hearing was supposed to have happened by now, but I can’t find anything on the news. I want to know if there will be a change in ownership at the campground before I go back.

  7. I’ve been going to The Woods for 15 or 16 years. It’s always been a good experience for me. This is a horrible thing to learn about Pat. He’s aways been gracious to me as a camp host. Hearing this news is like I’ve traveled into another dimension. I guess he’ll have his day in court, but it doesn’t look good for him.

I imagine the other partners are still reeling at this revelation. The last thing they want to do is put out a hurried, knee-jerk statement. They don’t know where all the pieces are going to land. There is no need for a rush to judgement.

I do worry about the locals’ reaction. Many of them will want to paint us all with the brush. I see many comments to this story from LGBTQ people already trying to do the same thing with everyone who works or stays at The Woods. Most campers have never been to the “Head Shed”. That is not a knock on the folks who do enjoy that experience, but it’s not a universal gay thing. I will not boycott the campground. There are too many great people there.

I do hope they up the security. On the road leading to the campground there is a driveway with “Trump Won” and “Don’t Tread On Me” flags, along with a warning that the property owner has guns. That does scare me a bit.

    • I can tell you right now. There are many Woods campers that “carry”. Woodys little signs about no guns are quite meaningless to those of us with conceal carry license. There are multiple Woods campers with guns & ammunition in our RV’s each season. Seriously, The Woods is not the only gay campground and gay men know how to protect themselves! We travel the country! We thought about this many years ago when purchasing a site here and at another campground and have kept a handgun & ammunition on both sites for a long time. The people that need to worry are those that would come after the defenseless gay people without guns. We not only have guns but we know how to shoot and can defend ourselves & neighbors from homophobes. If the “phobes” are going to come after us we are prepared and always have been. 😉

  9. New LGBTQ+ campground opening this season not far from the woods. On Mount Nebo Road. And the new campground doesn’t have a (accused) pedofile for an owner.

If you continue to go to the woods, you are financing this dirtbags legal fund.

    • There goes Pat’s fortune. 😆
Seriously, gurl, she hides so much money from the IRS with sales of sites and the camp funds for booze and parties in cash she could take off for Timbuktu and live the rest of her life in luxury. Too bad for the others that have invested 401ks, savings, time, etc. Pats crimes have multiple repercussions.

  11. Pat is not a very nice person. He never has been. Sadly, this news article is no surprise. Woody aka Pat is rude and arrogant. He only gets away with it
because The Woods is the place to be on the East coast for the gay community. I genuinely hope he disassociates with the Woods as there are a lot of nice professional gay people who frequent this campground and do not deserve the backlash that will result from his despicable behavior. Prayers for the relative and their courage to come forward.

  12. There are many good people who have invested a lot of their time and money into The Woods Campground over the last 20 years. They don’t deserve the backlash that this child molester will cause. Permanent campsites regularly sell at The Woods in the low 100 thousands because The Woods IS the place to be for the gay community on the East coast. This is a group of extremely wealthy east coast gay people that can afford whatever they want. They deserve a nice private environment and have paid dearly for it. The Woods is also a beautiful campground with a lovely group of perms and weekend campers. Pat aka “Woody” needs to sell his portion of investment within The Woods. Pat is an embarrassment and liability to The Woods Campground. He is also not the major financial investment. He is the “face” of The Woods and who wants a child molester in that position? John Adams Parr is the money. Be gone child molester Pat! You are an embarrassment to those of us that are openly gay and would never consider something as heinous as this. Your arrogance has come back to bite you in your ass. Molesting children is not acceptable and you need to go away. I pity your husband who does not deserve the pain you’re putting him through as well as your nephew. Be ashamed.

      • Right! Who’s to say that the grown man (then kid) isn’t making this up or exaggerating? Like what happened to Kevin Spacey (the accuser withdrew his charge long after Kevin was pre-maturely judged and convicted in the media and lost his role in House of Cards, ending up with a tarnished image that will preclude him from landing future roles in movies or shows). Honestly, we don’t know what happened with Pat and the kid — it’s an allegation, that’s all it is right now. Don’t pre-judge and convict him. Let it play out – that’s what the justice system provides.

  14. Patrick Gremling was arrested on 2/7/2022 in Miami Florida as he was getting off the boat from a gay cruise. He violated his bail conditions. What a jerk!

  15. Been going to the woods for years and know Pat and really thought he was a decent man, but guess you just don’t know anyone. Very sad to here about this situation and applaud his nephew for coming forward as sure very hard for him and hope getting help he needs as this will scar him for life. As far as Pat yourselves everything you get and you are a sick individual and you need to not be the face of the woods anymore, you should be a silent partner or be bought out. You have given our community a bad name and put us all at risk. Definitely need to get rid of family weekend events you can’t be trusted

  17. I feel so bad for this kid and I hope his abuser rots in jail for the rest of his life. If he is a young gay man he is going to have to watch his back for the rest of his life. I am sure that Gremling has other gay pedophile friends and they will know who he is.

  18. His actions are reprehensible to say the least, and he has now put anyone who camps there in the line of fire of the righties and Pennsyltuckians that reside nearby and revile us under normal circumstances. He’s reinforced the belief of many that we are nothing but child molesters, and rest assured some nut job will come through there with the idea of eliminating us. The place is tainted now, and in the small minds of the world, it will never not be.

It is both this reason and our lack of desire to support a criminal that we won’t be going back there.

    • There are other owners and employees who work hard for that place. Don’t punish them for his actions. I’m sure there will be inside changes to remove gim from the operation.

      • I agree that there are other owners and employees who work hard for the place. However, I would like to see the Woods Management make a statement regarding Pat as he was the face of the Woods Campground. If they continue to keep this under the rug and not address the elephant in the room it will damage the reputation of the Woods Campground.

I notice that his name was removed from the website and he was not part of the Woods Off Season Road Tour that occurred in Jim Thorpe last month.

As the other comment in the thread stated, is my reservations paying a small part of his legal bill. This is why I am hesitant about booking my campsites this season. If there was a statement from the management, I would have both laptops open and ready to book my sites for the season.

  19. The owner has given the folks who believe that homosexuals are pedophiles confirmation of that belief, and he’s given them the bucket of gasoline they look for to throw on the fires of hate for us. The facility is situated in Pennsyltucky, an area rife with people who would love to see us all dead. As such, it will never be safe for us there again. In addition to the safety issues he’s now likely created, my spouse and I have no desire to fund his defense or finance him in any way, and we won’t be returning.

  21. I wonder how many of these respondents really enjoyed a safe place in the woods for fun and sex ( or were just jealous of their perrs who still enjoy sex)
Amazing how the gay community loves to shame its own

Havent been in yrs since i moved west

But safe fun venues for gay men are disappearing

None of my comments condone him exploiting an underage kid

    Reply
    • Straight/gay/trans/”undecided” or whatever label everyone attaches to themselves, you go after a underage child, you’re fair game.

Will this deter people from going? No, those like me that have chosen to move on (there are other venues where one can go clothing optional) will be replaced by those that don’t know, don’t care.

For the record, I went mainly for friendship and meet friends and the ability to hike around CO in a quiet atmosphere before the weekend crowds hit. Do guys and girls go there for sex? Yes, even married couples go cause it’s cheaper than Sunnyrest up the road and if they wanted to play outside, they could without repurcussions.

  22. Kudo’s to the young man for having the courage to step forward and face his abuser. That took lot of strength, and hopefully you’ll get the justice you and others he’s abused deserve.

As for the owners of The Woods, if you’re reading this, I hope the sound of my membership card going thru the shredder is one of many heard by others doing the same. His actions, and your inactions have put the gay community square in the middle of the crosshairs of the religious groups who say we are nothing but a bunch of pedophiles. All in the name of profit. Shame on you, and shame on your “bring the kids” weekends.. makes you wonder what really happened on those occasions

  23. You ban people from driving 5 or 10 miles over the speed limit for life from the campground. It’s amazing how karma comes back. And now this is true trauma and real life things that should’ve been brought to light, especially since it was going on back in 2011. Hate that I feel vindicated in someone else’s misery buttt…I’m going to enjoy this slow burn. I hope the men (then kids) involved get the support they need
