Social media star Chris Stanley recently spilled the tea on how him and his boyfriend Bret LaBelle were mistaken as father and son, and how he reacted to the misunderstanding.

The 23-year-old YouTuber and 50-year-old ‘Survivor’ alum were buying a Christmas tree when a cashier made an assumption about their relationship.

“As I was checking out yesterday, buying this beautiful tree — yes, it’s real — my boyfriend is handing the cashier his credit card. But I’m like, ‘No, no, no. Let me pay for this,’ so I get out my credit card, and I hand it to her,” Stanley recalled.

He continued,

“She gets all excited, and she’s like, ‘Oh, yeah, nice!’ And I’m like, ‘Why is she so excited that I’m paying?’ And she’s like, ‘I believe the more you give, the more you get this holiday season.’ And I’m still kind of like, ‘Why is she saying this?'”

Stanley noted that the cashier “must have seen the look” on his face because she then asked for clarification:

“‘This is your dad, right?'”

And to that, Stanley looked at LaBelle, silently asking him if they should tell her the truth. Meanwhile, the ‘Survivor’ star just shook his head no, and they just let the cashier think that they are actually father and son…

“So I’m just like, ‘Yeah, yeah. That’s my dad.’ And I’m left wondering what the look would have been like on her face if I had told her,” Stanley further shared about his response to the cashier’s question.

  1. M first BF was 15 years older but unfortunately he died suddenly 9 months after we started dating. My partner of almost 20 years is 35 years younger than me. Luckily as he is Asian and I am Caucasian we do not get asked about our relationship but in Toronto there are a number of other such relationships = we get together with two other couples (same racial split) two or three times a year for dinner.

  2. I’ve actually had that happen to me. Checking out at the supermarket, my husband set some things on the conveyor belt after I had put some stuff up. I had to tell her it was all together. She asked if he was my caretaker. You should have seen the look on her face when I said, “No. That’s my husband”. The bagger nearly split his side trying to hold back his laughter. I figure she deserved it for one because I was maybe 55 and my husband 33. Not to mention that the correct term would be caregiver.

  3. Funny, I’ve never thought about age difference as prohibitive (although I recognize that other people do). When I was 20, I was dating a woman who had sons my age (her marriage was on the rocks before I came along, so I wasn’t made to feel guilty about it), and half a lifetime later I was dating a guy half my age, so I’ve “looked at love from both sides now” in more ways than one. I regret nothing. Age is just a number.

  5. They’re lucky to have found each other. I’m a slightly older gay gentleman who’s been looking for a younger twink for some time now. Hope to find him soon.
