Students at UC Berkeley can now take a course about R&B singer Frank Ocean.
When sophomores Preya Gill and Deborah Chang found out that students could propose and teach classes, they jumped at the chance to give lessons on the music and life of openly bisexual singer Frank Ocean.
The two students petitioned the university to offer the course and we excited to see that the class was approved.
As they told The Fader, the class will cover Frank Ocean’s artistic history, upbringing, background, musical influences, artist identity, and the way he challenges dominant social concepts such as toxic masculinity and gender politics.”
"We want to encourage a deep literary exploration of his artistry both in lyrics and through his visuals and live performances. We hope to provide a safe environment where students can discuss his poetry and music with sensitivity, creative respect, and open-mindedness," the pair said.
We wonder how Frank Ocean feels about a university class focused on him at UC Berkeley, or if he even knows about it. On that latter point, we think he might as Ocean’s mother tweeted out her approval of the course.
The class will be called “Brain Like Berkeley,” which is a lyric from Ocean’s song “Novacane.”
While students will be learning about him, Frank Ocean will be in the middle of filming an International Romance movie. The singer signed up for his first major acting role last month.
The film titled Ships Passing in the Night will star Ocean along with South Korean actresses Hye Kyo Song and Esther Nam. The movie is currently in pre-production
