Social Media

Gay Twitter Explained, Finally!

At a glance, we know Twitter to be one of the most popular social media platforms that we use today. As of 2018, Twitter boasts 335 million monthly active users, that’s about as many nudes I’ve taken this week, so that’s a lot.

But Twitter, like many platforms where people can voice their opinions, has many different facets. We have political Twitter for the Trumps, the Mays and the Jong-Il’s of the world. We have X-Rated Twitter, where our fellow porn stars promote their new scenes, homemade videos and content for us to enjoy under the covers. We have stan twitter, where music fans throw each other to the wolves constantly, resulting in a generous amount of controversy and ultimately, promotion for their favourite artist (I’m a Lamb for life, love you Mimi).

Which brings me to Gay Twitter. Gay Twitter has its roots in many of the above mentioned. We do the most we can for our pop princesses, we are extremely politically charged, especially when it poses a threat to our community, and there is an abundance of thirst traps, gym pictures and sex stories to appease the Sunday morning crowd.

So, I’ve taken it upon myself to enlighten you, what exactly is gay twitter? Nobody asked me to, but nobody asked Britney to slap so hard on ‘Break the Ice’, but she did.

I put out a tweet asking the gays to get in contact with me if they wanted to be a part of this, and they were only too happy to oblige, so I gathered my questions, sent a couple of nudes, and off we went. The first question was the most obvious; “What is ‘Gay Twitter’ to you?”

A Twitter user by the name of ‘Retweeta Ora’ summed it up like so

“On the surface I’d say it’s just LGBTQ+ people tweeting about LGBTQ+ things, so in reality ‘Gay Twitter’ doesn’t really exist but is more of an arbitrary construct to neatly sum that up.”

This suggests we are looking at a subculture, completely conceptualized and thriving online.

“I think what it really means (and what I’d say it means to me) is that because like-minded people are interested in (and therefore tweet about) the same topics and life experiences, they’re more likely to gravitate towards and converse with each other”

I wanted to get another view, another meaning of the term ‘Gay Twitter’. Resident Twitter lesbian ‘Miley Cystitis’ describes it as “A magical place full of reality TV references and Mariah Carey memes.”

But as with any subculture, there’s a bigger need for Gay Twitter, as Miley states

“I see it as a safe place to be as gay as I am without fear of being shamed.”

With the ever-growing popularity of social media, and the increasing strength in our community running parallel, could we perhaps find love on Gay Twitter?

“I suppose many use it as a dating platform” Ms. Cystitis continues, with Ora adding “It’s never really crossed my mind, but I can see how it might appeal to others. “

“I don’t know if many people would want to date me after reading my twitter feed” says Andy Claus, another twitter user.

But can we utilize this social media platform to hookup? Is Twitter the new Grindr?

“I’ve hooked up with people who follow me on twitter, but just because I've happened to meet them in other contexts like... out at a club. I've never really DM'd someone on there for a hookup. There's lots of people on there I *would* hook up with though, but usually they don't live within bumming distance.”

I feel you, Andy, I feel you. Of course, with social media comes an online presence. We are allowed to strip away any social norms and be whoever we want to be online, so do we really know who we are talking to? Could we be friends with the people who we retweet so often?

“it was a really positive experience which I’d love to have more often.” Says Retweeta.

“Up until we met, our relationship was based solely on liking/RTing each other’s tweets with the occasional reply, and we would also DM occasionally. Just from those interactions it was obvious that we had a lot in common, but as we were essentially strangers that was all that was really holding the friendship together. When he said he’d be in London with his boyfriend and that we should meet up I thought “why not?” and was actually really excited at the prospect.”

“I was recognized at pride as ‘Miley Cystitis’”. Well, that’s your own fault.

‘Gay Twitter’ is an umbrella term, underneath it has memes, pop stans, obsessions with 80’s TV stars, but most of all, it has a sense of community. It really is our space to be who we are as queer people, without any form of judgement, knowing that our peers are there to back us up at any moment.

What are your thoughts on online communities? Are we truly standing in solidarity with eachother?

Get Inspired For The HoliGAYS With These LGBTQ Icons!

For a couple of weeks now my partner and I have been stringing lights, putting up wreaths, hanging ornaments and stockings, and making our place feel as festive and ready for the holigays—you know, like the holidays but gayer. And what makes it the holigays? Well, the fact that everything is done with a little something extra—fabulousness.

Usually, I wait to find some inspiration from social media to be overcome with the spirit—but this year we got a head start—it’s the only thing that will make it feel like December in the 90 degree Southern California weather.

Still, we both like to sit on our couch, drinking hot chocolate with the fireplace playing on the T.V. as we swipe through the social media accounts of our favorite LGBTQ icons to see how they are making the holidays a gay ole time!

So here’s a little something to keep you going as you wrap those gifts, listen to Sia’s Everyday Is Christmas album, and dance around in those holiday jammies.

Happy Holigays!

Christmas AF.

Reality Star Johnny Lopez Comes Out On Video

Johnny Lopez, star of the reality show The Riveras and the son of the late Mexican singer Jenni Rivera, has publicly come out in a video on YouTube to discuss his sexuality. Johnny appears in the video with his sister Chiquis and explains how photos of him with his boyfriend of 2 years, Joaquin, were posted online and went viral--causing backlash from fans of his family's story and his mother's music.

A post shared by j.a. (@juanangeloficial) on

Johnny's late mother, Jenni Rivera, better known as La Gran Señora, was regarded for her strong, independent nature and for not taking nonsense from anyone. Her music was about empowerment and she revolutionized the Mexican regional music genre. Jenni passed away in a horrific plane crash in Mexico on December 9, 2012. Many have publicly scrutinized Johnny for his sexuality and questioned what Jenni Rivera would think of this news if she were alive today.

The video begins with Chiquis introducing the video in Spanish for their large Spanish-speaking demographic and mentions why the video is necessary for not only her brother and family, but for fans of her mother's music. Johnny take over around 1:41 in English so that he could more effectively communicate.

In the video, Johnny expresses the following:

I wanted to make this video first and for everyone to understand me but my boyfriend, as you all know, Joaquín, we both got a little too excited, and he posted a few pictures of us, and I retweeted them, and it went viral.

People began noticing that we were together. They didn’t come out exactly the way I wanted to but they’re out now. I am in a gay relationship right now and I am in love with this person. I’ve been dealing with this part of myself for a long time now.

In that time, I did experiment with girls, tried different things here and there. I still don’t know what my preference is personally.

But I do know that I love this person a lot, I’ve been in love with him for about two years now and I’m happy and it’s the happiest I’ve ever been.

I’ve dealt with this for so long and I never got to tell my mom about this side of myself.

And I know that’s the number one question in everyone’s mind, ‘What would your mom think?’

What If You Caught Cristiano Ronaldo In His Briefs?

If you came across the luscious Cristiano Ronaldo in the hall of a hotel room, what would you do? I can think of a few things…

The soccer player who loves to flaunt his bod recently shared an ad for Altice USA on his Instagram how quickly he can break the internet when the world reacts to his rock hard abs and some skin.

The video is sent up by Ronaldo watching images of himself on the news as he walks around in nothing but his teeny tiny boxer briefs. When he gets locked out of his hotel room in nothing but his unmentionables, he is saved by a female hotel employee who lets him back into the room—but not before snapping a quick pic of the heartthrob and sending it into the interwebs. When he enters the room once again, Ronaldo discovers that the picture has reached the news in just seconds.

That’s right—Ronaldo's body spreads like wildfire!

Rugby Player Sam Stanley Is Getting Criticism From Gays

Earlier this year, British rugby player Sam Stanley revealed his engagement to his partner of seven years, Laurence Hicks. The 25-year-old athlete and his future husband have since been quite the buzz because Hicks is 34 years older than Stanley. What a lucky silver daddy!

But among the floods of congratulations and well wishes, there has been some criticism that has taken the couple aback. Our friends at Queerty have reported on the surprising comments Stanley and Hicks have encountered on social media due to their relationship. Could this be because of the large age difference? Or could it be because their bodies are not equally athletic? Whatever the reason, it's the gay community that has been the most verbal about the couple's relationship and engagement. This is why we can't have nice things, people!

Here’s what the couple has to say about how everyone is taking their relationship.

I think if you’d caught the reaction to our engagement online most of the hate was from other gay people. That surprises me quite a lot with what gay people alone have to go through in terms of being judged. There’s a hell of a lot of judgement just within the gay community.

Younger gay guys who are obviously not into generational relationships don’t get it at all, particularly the difference in body size. Funnily enough, most of our straight friends are very comfortable with it. We both know the intergenerational thing is not everyone’s cup of tea, but please don’t judge either of us without really knowing us or appreciating the love we have for each other and the joy we bring to each others lives.

Living a public life is hard. If you put yourself out there enough for the world to see, its just a matter of time before people start showing their disapproval of everything you do. Of course it comes with the territory. But in a community that has already been marginalized, lived through struggle, and continues to be the subject of controversy--why have we not learned to accept and love one another?

There are plenty of thirsty marys out there who look at this and wonder "Damn, I want to get with that"

...and so it may be jealousy that Sam has found his other half and not with THEM that has led to animosity toward Sam finding love. Also doesn't this perpetuate some kind of shallow "no fats no fems" gay stereotype?

Instead of insulting via your phone's screen, shouldn't we appreciate this couple for the honest common relationship that they are?

Congratulations Sam and Laurence! In the words of RuPaul's mama "Unless they gonna pay your bills, pay them bitches no mind."

Jinkx Monsoon Sounds Off For Trans Individuals

Jinkx Monsoon, who snatched the crown on Season 5 of RuPaul’s Drag Race has taken to Twitter to take a stance for trans individuals and non-binary/non-gender individuals. It’s definitely Monsoon Season because Jinkx went on a long Twitter rant explaining that they came out as genderless 4 years ago, but they feel the need to continue speaking out for those individuals who still need a voice and support.

Jinkx wants to set the record straight about how they identify—expressing that drag has nothing to do with gender.

This is not the first time Jinkx has been vocal about gender identity

Jinkx slayed the competition on RPDR Season 5 and has since had great success with their vaudeville and variety shows. It appears like Jinkx is ready to “begin the Drag-Haute-Bohemian-Revolution” as stated on their Twitter profile.

Way to show them that standing up for ourselves and others is like “water off a duck’s back”, Jinkx!

Ya'll can take a seat now!

In support of the LGBTQ community being victimized in Chechnya, MTV has started a social media campaign #EyesOnChechnya. RuPaul, Sasha Velour, Lena Dunham, Mara Wilson, and other celebrities have joined the movement in order to bring light to this modern day witch hunt.

#EyesOnChechnya is intended to create visibility on the men who are being targeted, shamed, tortured and killed for being gay.

MTV says:

In Chechnya, gay and bisexual men have been hunted down, rounded up, and continue to be illegally detained in prison. Many have been tortured and at least three men have been murdered.

In spite of these horrors, not enough people are aware of what’s happening or taking action.

Together we can raise the volume on the public outcry, and let the world know that we have our #EyesOnChechnya.

Take action NOW.

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov has stated that this news is false because there are no gay people in his country.

Join the #EyesOnChechnya movement and help stop this nightmare.

Beyoncé Posts First Picture of Twins Sir And Rumi

If you scared, call that reverend--because Beyoncé just unloaded the first image of her new twins, Sir and Rumi and the world is SHOOK! Sir, in reference to a knight in shining armor, and Rumi, a 13th century poet who taught others to release their “imprisoned spirit” by dancing--two names that fit perfectly with the royal family of the recording world.

Posing in what I definitely think is her freakum dress and a blue veil, the Queen B is looking sweet and angelic with her newborns the whole beyhive has been dying to see. A picture that echoes a similar maternity photo from months ago.

Sir Carter and Rumi 1 month today.

2.4m Likes, 121k Comments - Beyoncé (@beyonce) on Instagram: "Sir Carter and Rumi 1 month today. "

Bey has a knack for pulling out special surprises to snatch the limelight and keep people on their toes. Can she do no wrong?

Well--earlier this year she DID cancel her headlining performances at Coachella, sending thousands of cries of disappointment up to the heavens. But that's only because she had these two bundles of joy ready to pop out of her! We forgive you, Bey! See you in 2018!

Welcome to social media world, Sir and Rumi! You have some big Blue shoes to fill.
